It’s not uncommon to wonder why a topic is trending on Twitter. Sometimes, topics are even among the “most popular trends” simply because users are asking them! Twitter promises that this is no longer something that will happen today: with a new feature.
In fact, the social network decided to provide more context to these trends in two different ways. Choose a tweet that clearly explains the “trend” and pin it so that every user who goes to the tab sees it first. These tweets are selected by both an algorithm and a team of people. The goal is also to prevent offensive or irrelevant messages from being displayed. Twitter gives a concrete example: If the topic #Kpop is trending, the pinned tweet will be a tweet from a Korean group releasing a new album. The same tweet that started the trend.
Recontextualize discussion topics
For more complex topics, Twitter is introducing a second new feature: short texts explaining the situation. Here’s another example. If you go to the “Hero Firefighter” trend, you’ll get a text that says firefighters saved a child’s life in a certain city. Sometimes it’s a way of contextualizing things in uncertain trends.
These two new features are available today on all platforms, whether iOS, Android or desktop. Approximately ten countries are affected by this functionality, Including France.
Twitter is trying to clarify its recently confusing network. For example, it is now possible to see quotes attached to a tweet directly below. Previously, users were talking about a bot to see them. The network also announced that it will not stop there and that other changes to clarify the experience are currently in development.
