We’ve known since December 2020 that Periscope was in its final months. So as expected, Twitter Periscope was removed from the Play Store and App Store on April 1, 2021. Almost all the features of the now defunct social network have been integrated into Twitter. The social network explains, for example: “To go live on Twitter, first tap the icon to compose a tweet, then tap the camera icon and select ‘Live’ from the menu.” Here’s Twitter’s statement:
“Here we are. We say goodbye. Today is the last day the Periscope app will be available. We extend our gratitude to all the creators and viewers who enlighten the Pope community. We hope to see you all live on Twitter.”explains the company in a tweet. In fact Periscope was an independent venture founded by Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein.. However, its launch came after the startup was acquired by Twitter in 2015 for an amount between $50 million and $100 million.
The success was immediate and the app quickly attracted several hundred million users. Yet it was quickly caught up in scandals. Especially because of the live-streamed actions and attacks. There was the case of SFR employees who directly broke the smartphone of an unpleasant customer. In 2016, two young people live-streamed an attack in which they were the perpetrators. They randomly knocked people down on the street and saw the audience grow to 1,500; the perpetrators were quickly caught and brought to justice.
But there are also darker things, like on May 10, 2016 A 19-year-old woman committed suicide by throwing herself onto the RER C tracks at Egly station in Essonne during a Periscope live broadcast. But that’s not why the app is shutting down. In fact, the social networking industry is constantly evolving, and Twitter is adapting to the growing success of Clubhouse, the audio-based social network. That’s why Twitter now wants to concentrate more of its resources in Space. Social network inspired by Clubhouse.
