When buyers get the sleek new LG G5 out of the box and set up, a few things need to change. In fact, multiple LG G5 settings or features can be activated to offer a better overall experience, ease of use and more on this unique modular smartphone.
These are some of the first LG G5 settings we changed on our devices and are the things we recommend that buyers do so that they can enjoy their new phone to the fullest, explore all the options and G5 settings and get the most out of the phone.
Shiny and enhanced aluminum, dual camera, fingerprint scanner, modular G5 is now available all over the world, so users have many questions. These changes will simplify things, add extra features, improve the LG G5 and prepare its owners for the future.
While most G5 users have enjoyed LG phones in the past, this could be your first LG as it has a replaceable battery and a micro-SD slot that most phones don’t offer. Exploring these settings will help users recognize the device, know where everything is, and have the best possible experience at the same time.
Almost everything detailed above will improve performance and daily tasks on the G5, disable what most users don’t need or want, and add and turn on additional features to make it the best smartphone possible. Some are disabled out of the box.
Of course all users should install the fingerprint scanner it recommends during the first boot, customize quick settings in the notification bar to get quick access to the flash as a flashlight, and other stuff, but these LG G5 settings go even further. He. Take a look at everything we recommend below.
Set Multiple Fingerprints
On first boot, the G5 will set its owners a fingerprint along with a second level of security like a password, pattern or pin. The fingerprint scanner is extremely fast and easy to use, and setup only takes 7-8 taps with one finger. Registering Samsung devices takes more time like 12-15 and takes much longer.
However, we recommend speeding up the installation and adding a few more after the first fingerprint. Having the scanner at the very back won’t add thumbs of course, but you’ll want multiple fingers registered.
Nestled inside the power button below the camera is the fingerprint scanner, which is where most users put their index finger while holding the phone. It protrudes a little, making it easier to find and touch.
Come in. We recommend users add both index fingers on both hands for easy unlocking. Also maybe a third finger. One thing I liked was tapping the scanner here with a finger, and it shows users what pressure was registered on that particular finger. So the owners don’t accidentally delete the wrong one when they need to redo it.
Also, for the most accurate angle possible and recorded data, we recommend redoing the registered fingerprint after a case is attached. This will provide a good experience to move forward.
Learn or Activate Quick Camera and Tap to Wake
There are two quick things all owners should know. When the screen is off, double-tap the volume down or double-tap the screen. Double-clicking the volume down starts the camera in less than 0.08 seconds, and double-tapping the screen turns it on. Both of these are extremely convenient.
Being able to open the camera instantly is a nice feature that many people love and “KnockON” allows us to use the phone even when it is on the table. Double tap, enter a PIN and continue using the phone without picking up and calling power or fingerprint scanner. It’s fast, simple and easy. Double tap anywhere on the screen that is blank and it will instantly turn off the screen as well. LG was the first to offer this, and it’s still one of our favorite features.
Add Micro SD Card
LG G5 only has 32GB internal storage and AT&T model uses around 12GB out of the box due to all software, LG apps, AT&T apps, Amazon Apps and other stuff users will never use. We’ll also explain how to hide most of them below.
As a result, your brand new phone only has about 20-22GB of available space, which will quickly fill up with apps, games, photos and videos. This has less space than the Samsung Galaxy S7, which is generally the worst when it comes to bloatware.
The G5 can handle up to 2TB of storage, which is a ton. However, the highest available micro SD is 200GB, with some 128GB options always being sold on Amazon at super low prices. Once done, make sure the camera saves to SD card instead of internal storage. It should change this to default, but check the camera settings to be sure.
Use the SIM eject tool with the micro SD card and put it in some extra storage to last you a few years.
Turn on “Always On Display”
A big selling point of the LG G5 is always on the screen. It opens a small area of the screen in low power mode 24/7 to show its owners the time, date and missed calls or incoming notifications. It allows us to see quick information without opening the phone. Studies show that most users unlock their phone more than 150 times a day.
Enabling this feature uses only 1% of battery life per hour, 8% all day at work, and saves battery in the long run by keeping the screen off for those who need a quick glance.
For whatever reason (probably the tiny 2,800 mAh battery), this was disabled right out of the box, but LG talked a lot about it when announcing the phone.
Go to the Always On Display and you’re ready.
Download a New Master Launcher (Application Tray)
You may have noticed that the LG G5 doesn’t have an app drawer or tray like all Android devices do. Similar to an iPhone, all apps are affixed to home screens or folders. Let’s fix this.
No Application Tray
This can be confusing for average smartphone owners, but Android devices can easily be completely swapped out in seconds. Change the entire look, feel, operation and features of the home screen and application tray with something called a “launcher”. These have been popular for years and the LG Home Launcher on the G5 does not have an app tray. So users don’t know where to look for apps or they’re all thrown into folders on a second screen.
To make your phone work like any other Android you have, go to Google Play Store and download Google Now Launcher, NOVA Launcher or even LG Home 4.0 (here). A few icons on the screens and the rest in the application tray.
Clean Up and Customize the Popup Bar
Notification popup bar is extremely useful on Android devices. There are 5 icons for quick shortcuts to some of the most used settings and these can be customized by pressing the small button on the top right next to the settings icon. I have the option to take a quick screenshot with WiFi, Bluetooth, Flashlight and the “Capture+” button.
However, the owners probably noticed that the notification center is filled with tons of unnecessary things taking up space. Like a slider for brightness and volume, screen sharing, and some silly file sharing icons. These are helpful in certain scenarios on rare occasions and do not always have to be here.
Above is a view of the notification bar options and quick settings, the edit button is highlighted and then you can see we unchecked everything we didn’t want. We recommend that owners disable almost all of these and maybe keep the volume or brightness based on your needs.
This frees up space for important things like incoming messages, emails, Facebook notifications, and more.
Disable Bloatware
As we said above, the LG G5 uses around 12GB of storage out of the box with tons of useless apps. Things like AT&T apps, T-Mobile TV, Verizon Navigator (or their horrible text app) and then things like Amazon, DirecTV, Yellow Pages, Uber, Lookout Security, and more. A ton of space-wasting apps that almost no one will use.
Unfortunately we can’t remove them and get our space back, but we can completely disable and hide them. Clearing the home screen, the app tray, and letting the phone show only the apps we really care about.
Pull down the notification bar and tap the gear-shaped Settings button, then scroll to select any of the aforementioned apps and tap . This will uninstall and disable the latest version and then hide the app. Unfortunately it’s our only option, but it’s better than nothing.
Use “Smart Settings”
LG has a nice option called Smart Settings which is very useful and saves battery life and time. Similar to Motorola Actions in those days. When you leave the house, Smart Settings automatically turns off WiFi (if you want) and turns on Bluetooth for hands-free driving and calls in the car. It knows your location when you go to work and turns WiFi back on if available.
Go to Settings > General > Smart Settings > and try a few options. We can even set the G5 to automatically open Google Music when headphones are plugged in. These are little, clever adjustment shortcuts that many owners love when everything is set up perfectly. Give it a try today.
Turn On NFC and Android Pay
Users running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and equipped with a fingerprint scanner can make wireless mobile payments with Android Pay. Go to Google Play Store and download Android Pay, turn on NFC in settings and add a credit card.
Next, tap Android Pay, sign in securely with a fingerprint, and tap the LG G5 into a payment terminal to easily and quickly pay on the go.
Turn on Battery Saver and Charge a Backup
Most buyers who ordered the LG G5 got a second spare 2,800mAh battery and a portable charging dock to charge it without plugging it into the phone. This is very nice, because it allows you to quickly replace a charged battery in a matter of seconds.
It’s even easier to have a spare full battery after work, as the LG G5 charges from 0-80% in about 35 minutes using the included charger. But we can also extend the remaining time by using the battery saver mode. It’s a batter saver mode under Settings > Battery that will turn on at 15% once enabled. This turns off unnecessary stuff to extend battery life for a few more hours. Ideal for a night out or in an emergency. It’s good to have one, know about it, and be ready to use it.
Now the LG G5 is ready for almost anything, but feel free to browse the settings to learn more about the phone. Once down, check out some official LG G5 accessories below.
