Our 20-minute colleagues report in a lengthy editorial article that to date, the StopCovid app has only been downloaded by 1.7 million French people, or less than 2% of the population. We’re still a long way from the 14% required for this practice to have the slightest statistical impact. and we’re not talking about it 60% required for app to have satisfactory effectiveness.
StopCovid: too little, too late
While the app arrives very late, the de-quarantine process is already well underway. But this is probably not the only reason that drives the French to such skepticism. there is firstThe approach that the French authorities decided to adopt, unlike many of our European neighbors. Tracking data is truly centralized rather than staying on the smartphone.
This approach poses a real risk to data security, despite reassuring messages from the government. And that’s not the only problem. Less secure by design, the decentralization of this practice (dare we speak of Jacobinism) really does difficult to reconcile with the more protective and decentralized approach of practices designed in neighboring countries like Germany.
This has also led the European Commissioner for digital Margrethe Vestager to openly criticize the approach taken by France.
StopCovid risks excluding France from a European contact tracing system
The Commissioner argued that the situation was even more contradictory because While France has been begging for a common solution for the Union countries from the beginning, it prefers to ignore the choices of its neighbors.. Good game !
Then The usefulness of this French app is enough to raise questions in a Schengen area with open borders.. Citizens of neighboring countries cannot use contact tracing apps in France and vice versa.
Our colleagues in 20 minutes also remember that the effectiveness of such an application remains a big question mark and that the experiments launched abroad are not very convincing at the moment…
