Covid-19 is far from gone. The virus continues to kill the French every day. According to Santé Publique France, 30,468 people have died since the start of the epidemic, 17 of which have been killed in the last 24 hours. 225,043 were contaminated. Between 18-19 August, 3,776 new cases were detected. 4806 hospitalized. The regions of Île-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Cotes-d’Azur, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Hauts-de-France are mainly affected.
Another sad report was announced by the General Directorate of Health this week: StopCovid use. The numbers confirm the advertised failure of the venture: the app has been downloaded 2.3 million times Since its arrival on Play Store and App Store on June 2nd. Note that the Minister for Digital, Cédric O, announced at the end of July (that is, almost a month ago) that the app had been downloaded between 2 and 2.5 million times. It wasn’t good anyway. This stagnation in numbers a few weeks later is sad.
1169 reports and 72 notifications sent
Even more upsetting is the app’s usage log. According to figures provided by the organization, 1169 QR code forwarded to the StopCovid platform to monitor contamination routes. In three months, 1169 people reported getting sick to the platform because of this, while France has three times as many new cases every day.
As a reminder, users must voluntarily declare that they are contaminated by scanning the QR Code found in the scan tests. In doing so, they inform the platform, which can send alerts to anyone who has passed by the contaminated person in the previous days. The number of alerts sent since June 2, 2020 is also very low: 72 notifications only.
These numbers are low for two reasons. First, few people have a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and an app installed. The efficiency of the system depends on the number of users. Therefore, more people equipped to create more detections and better trace the transmission routes of the virus are needed. Then the system is based on voluntary work. The French decide whether they want to install the app, but also to notify the platform of their positive scans. Less than 1200 people played the game.
