Spotify is improving the display of lyrics for some songs on the platform. A growing number of users in certain markets are reporting on social media that a new lyric “map” provided by Musixmatch is now appearing below certain songs. This attachment appears under the cover of the currently playing song (if applicable) and changes the color of the text to white, showing in real time what the artist is saying.
Spotify confirms that this new feature is being tested in certain markets, without further details. According to numerous user feedback on Twitter, countries where this new display has been tested include Canada, Indonesia and Mexico. Spotify already shows some trivia besides the lyrics under certain songs. A service created in collaboration with the Genius site. The problem is that the current system is more Powerpoint than a real time display like karaoke.
The panel does indeed display a paragraph of text (anecdotes and lyrics) at a time that is more or less (but not always) updated at the right time. However, users now have an alternative to view lyrics in real time. The Soundhound app makes it super simple: start playing a song on Spotify, go to Sondhound and the lyrics are displayed in real time.
Spotify has been looking for an efficient way to show lyrics in its apps for a while. This feature was once available on the PC/Mac version of Spotify and has been removed from almost every part of the world except Japan. The platform is now under pressure from a large number of users to demand the functionality and competition, notably Apple Music, which enables real-time display of lyrics in the iOS 13 app.
Therefore, there is a good chance that this feature will land in all markets quickly. Still, we hope Spotify will offer the lyrics in a wide range of titles. Because nowadays it’s not that common to see a Genius plugin under songs.
