This guide reviews everything you need to know about all OnePlus Android Pie updates. from what updates available, betas and what to expect. This includes the newly released official OnePlus 3 Android Pie update. finally here.
Thanks to Google’s Android Pie Developer Preview, OnePlus was one of the first to release Android Pie to its users. Since then, they’ve continued to offer it for every device they offer, including phones that are outdated from 2016.
OnePlus has quickly updated the OnePlus 5 and 6 phone families, and now it’s time for the OnePlus 3 and 3T update. Google’s Android 9 update is loaded with new features, smart controls and more. Features you want to have on your phone as soon as possible.
OnePlus Android 9.0 Pie Updates
OnePlus is one of the best when it comes to releasing software updates. Since assembling their entire developer team in 2017, they’ve outstripped bigger manufacturers like LG, Samsung, and Motorola when it comes to updates. We’ve seen fast delivery of Android 7.0 Nougat, Android 8.0 Oreo, and now Android 9 Pie.
That change, between beta and Project Treble, OnePlus delivered its first Android Pie update to the OnePlus 6 in September. Just a month after Google released themselves. This is the fastest of any new software the company has ever released.
We’ve seen updates arrive in September, December, and more in January. Pretty much every phone they offer is on Pie. And now, OnePlus 3 Android 9 Pie Update available which is impressive for a phone released in 2016.
Will My OnePlus Get Android 9?
Which OnePlus devices will get Android 9 P? Well, more than we expected and here’s a official statement from the company itself.
“For the past few months, we’ve been working closely with Google on the Android P Beta program. The progress we’ve made together has greatly accelerated thanks to everyone’s participation and continued feedback. Android P update is rolling out to OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T, and OnePlus 3/3T, in that order. will be available. We will keep you all updated in the coming months.”
Here you got it. First, Android Pie update available for OP 6, 6T Pie came out pre-installed, then 5/5T in December.
Confirming that the old 3 and 3T are getting Android 9 is really important and something all owners can appreciate.
OnePlus Android P Beta
Now that the OnePlus 6 and 5 series have left the beta program, we all know what’s next. This is, of course, a Android 9 Pie beta for 3 and 3T. After a long delay, it launched in China on March 22 and went live for everyone on the forum on April 17.
This beta ran for months and was completed for global launch on May 22.
What’s New in Android 9 Pie
There are many new Android 9 features you can use to do more with your phone and tablet. Users will enjoy bulk and smarter notifications, autofill improvements and tons of “smart” features. Not to mention new gesture navigation controls, digital health options, adaptive battery saver, Google Assistant improvements, themes and notch support. This is on top of the usual performance and battery life changes.
Here is a detailed breakdown of everything new. Then we also compared it to Android 8 Oreo for those who are interested. Otherwise, take a look at the first official OnePlus Android Pie Changelog below.
A potential bonus is that they use a fairly stock Android experience. Since it’s not covered in a coating like Samsung or LG, it should arrive quickly and work smoothly. Expect the Oxygen OS update to have a few improvements, bug fixes, and new features specific to OnePlus devices alongside everything in our link above.
We expect almost anything to come from the 6 and 6T to older devices like the OnePlus 5. As long as the hardware allows, of course.
Final Thoughts and What’s Next
Currently, every OP phone from the past three years is running Android 9 Pie. Seriously impressive. OnePlus released Pie for the OnePlus 3 from 2016, before most LG phones in 2018. The company beat big names like Samsung, Motorola, and LG on several fronts for its launch.
However, older devices like the OnePlus 2 will not receive this software, which is fair. And now, the company has turned its attention to Android Q, which will likely launch in September. You can try the Android Q beta right now on your OnePlus 6T or the new OnePlus 7 Pro.
In the meantime, if you’re having issues with your OP phone, here’s a rundown of some potential fixes. This should help with any major issues that arise. If this update doesn’t revive your old OP3, just get the new OnePlus 7 Pro.
