There are several excellent Android phones available right now: OnePlus7 Pro or Pixel 4XL. However, your decision just got tougher with the OnePlus 8 Pro just around the corner. If you’re considering buying a new phone, here’s everything we know about the OnePlus 8 and how it compares to its predecessor.
OnePlus will release several different versions of the OnePlus 8 this year, all with different screen sizes and prices. While the OnePlus 7 technically comes in two sizes, buyers are still trying to decide which one to buy. Here’s how they compare and a few key details.
Both of these phones have huge screens, stock Android 10 up-to-date software, and a lot to love. However, another year is new and it should make a big difference. If you already own the OnePlus 7 Pro, you probably won’t want to upgrade, but for anyone on the fence or trying to decide whether to buy one now, here’s everything we know.
Then, hiding under that big OnePlus 8 Pro screen is also an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone takes a picture of your fingerprint from the screen, confirms and unlocks. This will likely be the same optical scanner that the 7 Pro has in 2019, but we’ll have to wait and see.
OnePlus 7 Pro is still a great phone
As for the rest of the design, they’re both massive premium phones made of metal and glass, covering both the front and back glass. They are fragile, have cameras protruding from the back, and are large. Having the camera inside the screen instead of the mechanical moving part sticking out makes the OnePlus 8 more durable, potentially more water resistant, and will prevent issues with the front camera. OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro: Cameras
Next, we want to talk briefly about the cameras on both of these phones as that will be another area OnePlus is trying to push here in 2020 with the new OnePlus 8 Pro.
Leaks and sources suggest that OnePlus will use a massive upgraded 60MP main camera for everyday photos and video, then use a similar setup to previous models for telephoto zoom, wide-angle photos and more. Yes, the megapixel counts are different and we don’t know exactly why. Hopefully the OnePlus 8 Pro has a better 3-5x telephoto lens rather than just 2x, and potentially a better wide-angle lens. Also, the 8 Pro will have a 4th camera for depth sensing and the like, which the 7 Pro lacks.
From previous models and what we’ve seen here, it’s pretty clear that the new phone will have a better camera. This is how things go. That said, cameras are never the “best” part of OnePlus phones, so that probably isn’t the most important aspect of your decision. If so, maybe consider the Galaxy S20+.
OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro: Battery Life and Charging
Another area of improvement would be the size of the battery and the charging speed. Here are the numbers that show the OnePlus 8 Pro will do better in this category. Also, the company continues to improve WARP charging and may even add wireless charging to the 8 Pro this year.
We won’t know more about battery life until the OnePlus 8 Pro arrives, and we’ll see how much of an impact the larger screen 120Hz and 5G have overall. We’ll post the results here when we can test it. Either way, the battery is bigger and that’s a good thing.
OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro: 5G Connectivity and Carrier Support
OnePlus is still a relatively new brand to US buyers as they are only sold online or in T-Mobile stores. All that is about to change in 2020 and you will want to know everything about these new phones. The OnePlus 7 Pro is only available from T-Mobile, while the 7T Pro 5G is sold by T-Mobile and Sprint.
With the OnePlus 8 Pro, it looks like Verizon will offer a model that includes 5G, potentially AT&T, and certainly two other carriers from previous years. This means that OnePlus can finally be sold by all major US carriers. We don’t know if the OnePlus 8 Pro will have 5G as an option or come with 5G ONLY, but we’ll find out more soon.
Either way, it will be offered unlocked and will work with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and worldwide, possibly 5G. While the regular OnePlus 7 Pro only works in certain situations, with certain carriers, or while it struggles to be activated on Verizon and other carriers. If you want faster connectivity and a bargain-free experience, wait for the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Release Date and Pricing
As we said before, OnePlus 7 Pro for under $600 all over the internet and even OnePus 7T Pro from late 2019 still a great phone. However, both will soon be lightly beaten by this OnePlus 8 Pro.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any exact information on a OnePlus 8 Pro release date yet, but we have an opinion based on previous years. We believe OnePlus will likely announce the OnePlus 8 in late March or early April, and the . The OnePlus 7 came out in May, following a launch event in March.
If there’s one area where OnePlus continues to dominate the competition, which is why it’s a growing brand in the US and worldwide, it’s in pricing. As you can see above, last year the OnePlus 7 Pro was just $669, compared favorably with the $1,000 Galaxy S10+. We expect something similar here in 2020. Here is our estimate for this year’s pricing.
This new model will be expensive, but while offering only a little more storage and subtle upgrades. We think this is the year OnePlus finally stopped offering 64GB as an option and only carries the 128GB models. Either way, compared to the Galaxy S20 and iPhone 11 Pro, the OnePlus 8 Pro looks like a great value.
Basically, you’re going to want to wait and buy one of OnePlus’ new phones. We hear they’ll have the OnePus 8 Lite for around $449, followed by a regular OnePlus 8 that’s cheaper than the ones described above. However, we can only get the Pro model in the United States.

In closing, we highly recommend waiting a month or so for more information before purchasing anything else. The OnePlus 8 Pro is shaping up to be the perfect phone this year. It might even be better than the Google Pixel 5. However, if you’re not that happy with the changes, go ahead and get a OnePlus 7 Pro or OnePlus 7T Pro now and enjoy.
What that means is that while OnePlus has a few great phones from 2019 you can already pick it up for a hefty discount given the low price they’re asking for, you can expect its new phone to arrive in the first few months of 2020. If you absolutely need a new phone right now, you’re better off waiting and buying the OnePlus 8, or at least waiting and getting the 7T Pro at a hefty discount.
