The MOTA Premium Extended Battery Case for Galaxy S6 looks a lot like Samsung’s latest phone and even many others on the market for the iPhone, but there are a few changes that make it stand out.
My only real complaint is both pro and con and that weight. It’s heavier than some cases that offer a similar extended battery along with a similar design and function, but that’s because it’s made from a quality internal battery. Many inexpensive $20 Galaxy S6 battery cases claim to offer more than 4,000mAh, but they’re light and don’t last as long as they should for a battery of this size. That said, the MOTA really lives up to its promise of 3,500mAh with high-quality premium battery cells, and I see almost two days or more of battery with my Galaxy S6 daily.
MOTA calls it a “slim fit” battery case, and while it looks pretty thick (which it is), it’s actually thinner than most of its competitors. Weighing just 3.1 ounces and only 0.61 inches thick, it’s both thinner and lighter than the Mophie, which offers a smaller battery, and is thinner than most of the cheaper options available all over Amazon. As such, it is quite light, albeit a bit heavy compared to some of its competitors or anyone who has used a similar case.
This means owners will get extra protection, better grip, durability, over 200x battery life improvements and more in a relatively light and thin package.
MOTA has created a soft-touch matte black or white design with ports that aim the Galaxy S6’s bottom-facing speaker forward for better sound. It’s not much better, but it feels a little better. Tactile buttons are super easy to press, and four LED lights on the back indicate battery levels. Then of course a big power button on the back to open the case.
All users have to do is detach the durable and re-enforced case with a fingernail and slide the Galaxy S6 down from the bottom first and connect it to the integrated micro USB port, then plug in the top. Some battery cases don’t offer this and the phone slides in and out easily. That means it’s more of a battery and not a case. You get protection from drops with the MOTA, and the case extends to protect the screen from scratches when sitting face down on the table. It’s pretty hard to trick it into, making it drop-proof, but that can be an issue for those who are afraid of breaking their Galaxy S6 while trying to open it or plug it in.
One thing I really like about the MOTA is that when you plug the phone and case into a charger, it charges both devices simultaneously. Both Galaxy S6 and MOTA. When the phone is full, the battery case continues to charge. Then, when someone uses the Galaxy S6 during the day and the battery is low, simply long press the power button on the lower back to open the case; this will fully charge the phone again.
To preserve the water left inside the MOTA case, it is recommended to press the power button for 3 seconds when the Galaxy S6 is full, instead of constantly letting the phone try to charge its battery. Use only as needed and the battery will last longer. I went from 50% to full four times on a single charge. Basically, it lets me go for about two days without plugging my phone in once.
Precise cutouts allow full access to all ports for remote control functions, speakers, buttons and even the infrared sensor on the top. MOTA then integrated a chip inside the case that would prevent short circuits or overcharging, preserving the lifespan of both batteries on board.
Buyers will see four LEDs on the back that go in 25% increments as expected, and they’ve proven pretty accurate since my week of testing. I dropped it once while getting into my truck and was happy to see that the case was in place and the top snap-in did not detach from the device. So it did its job and protected my Galaxy S6 while simultaneously charging.
