With DeX mode, Samsung has already shown that a smartphone can turn into a real mobile PC. However, DeX’s recurring criticism is that it’s definitely not a true desktop operating system: it’s impossible to install all your favorite apps – you’ll have to be content with a few Android apps adapted for this mode. Still, Samsung is developing an alternative: Linux on DeX. The principle is the same as DeX except it lets you use real Linux apps and not Android apps. It allows you to install and launch a complete Ubuntu image ported to the ARM architecture.
Compatible with Linux on DeX, Galaxy S10, S9 and Tab S5e
Samsung offers this innovation as a feature for developers. But anyone familiar with how Linux works should find something to enjoy here too. Linux on DeX has been updated and is now compatible with the following devices:
- Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+, S10 5G
- Galaxy S9, S9+
- Galaxy Note 9
- Galaxy Tab S4
- Galaxy Tab S5e
For the app to work on Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S9, they must be running Android 9.0 + Samsung One UI. What is surprising is to see that Samsung is also interested in this DeX mode on the Tab S5e, a tablet with a mid-range Snapdragon 675 SoC in standard configuration and 4GB of RAM. No doubt what we’d hope to see this feature coming to other devices with a more modest technical sheet than the firm’s standard carriers – we’re of course considering smartphones, although it’s probably too early to know. .
