LG G7 vs LG G6: What You Need to Know

With the LG G7 release date fast approaching, here’s what buyers need to know and what to expect. In this guide, we’ll go over everything that’s new, what’s changed, and how it compares to the LG G6. If you’re a fan of LG, need a new phone, or just want to upgrade, we’ve got you covered.

LG took the best of the G6 and made it better, bigger and faster, and that’s the LG G7 ThinQ. This phone has many features that other phones do not have. Features that many LG users absolutely love.

These features include a dedicated Google Assistant button, a wide-angle camera lens, and a built-in Quad DAC for better audio. Not to mention a large 6.1-inch screen, brand new AI tech, and a sleek design that’s been updated for 2018.

While there are several excellent Android phones currently or soon to be released, the LG G7 is arriving on June 1. It makes it one of the best upcoming Android smartphones. So, if you have the LG G6 and want to upgrade or don’t know what to replace your old G4 with, here are all the details.

LG G7 vs G6: Display

First of all, we need to talk about that screen. If you’re coming from the 5.7-inch LG G6 or the even smaller 5.3-inch LG G5, that’s a big upgrade. The phone you want is the new LG G7 ThinQ.

In the LG G7 you get the edge-to-edge design that other phones have. Phones like the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X. LG had a large 6.1 inch 3120 x 1440 Quad-HD FullVision LCD display. So yes, it’s almost half an inch larger than the LG G6. All in one almost the same size device, thanks to the shrinking bezels.

It extends to the top and bottom of the phone with almost no black bars or bezels on the sides of the device. Looks great. Perfect for watching sports or Netflix. One thing to keep in mind is that the screen has a new aspect ratio. Longer and thinner than older phones. It still makes the G7 easy to hold and use while still offering a huge screen. If you’ve ever seen a Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9, Note 8 or iPhone X, you know what to expect.

And yes, the LG G7 ThinQ has a notch on the screen like the iPhone X. This is something we’ll be seeing at Android manufacturers throughout 2018. Hopefully, this isn’t a deal breaker. If so, LG has a nice software trick that will hide the notch completely or let you customize it however you want. It’s almost like a secondary screen.

LG G7 vs LG G6: Design

If the LG G6 and LG G7 have anything in common, it’s design. Although they look different in some areas, such as the screen or the rear cameras, both have a premium high-end design. In recent years LG has made a big attempt to beat Samsung and Apple with premium building materials, and the LG G7 did not disappoint. Here LG tells Moyens I/O about the design, artificial intelligence and how they created this new phone.

With both the LG G6 and G7, you’ll have an all-metal and glass phone. Like the windshield and the rear. Unlike older LG phones, this one doesn’t have a removable back or battery. However, this sealed design option makes the phone better quality, provides water resistance and gives you wireless charging. Three things anyone can appreciate.

You’ll see two cameras and a fingerprint scanner on the back of both phones. These are also different. On the LG G6, the fingerprint scanner doubles as the power button and you can click it. With the LG G7 there is only a browser and a dedicated power button on the right side of the phone. Other than that, these two phones look pretty similar.

In closing, both phones have a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C and a speaker at the bottom.

LG G7 vs LG G6: Features

If there was one downside to the LG G6 last year, it was that the phone was less powerful compared to its rivals. It had old features within the day it arrived. With the LG G7 you get one of the most powerful phones available in 2018.

As you can see, the LG G7 has everything you could want from a high-end phone. A big and bright screen, three cameras, lots of power and 64GB of storage. Then, as usual, LG continued to use the award-winning Quad DAC for better sound. Also, the new “boombox” speaker at the bottom reportedly sounds twice as loud as most phones on the market and has more bass thanks to some new tech. It’s exciting, even if it’s not looking ahead.

The LG G6 isn’t nearly as powerful and works internally on devices that came in 2016, not 2017.

With the LG G7 you get double the storage, a much faster processor and the latest Android 8.0 Oreo software. As with the front camera, both cameras are better at 16 megapixels. If the LG G7 has one major downside, it’s battery life. As you can see, the LG G7 has a small 3,000mAh battery that powers a large 6.1-inch display. Compare that to the LG G6, which rocks a 3,300mAh battery for the 5.7-inch screen. We are concerned that battery life may be an issue for some.

LG G7 vs LG G6: Cameras

Another important aspect of these two phones is their cameras. All three are better in 2018. Like many LG phones, the new LG G7 has two cameras on the back. However, unlike previous years, both are pretty good.

With the LG G6, you had a 13MP camera followed by a lower quality wide-angle lens that was still 13 megapixels. This year LG went with two 16-megapixel cameras, both of which are very high-end sensors. One is incredibly fast and takes great photos in low light thanks to the AF/1.6 aperture. Next, the secondary 16MP sensor has wide-angle for better photography in certain situations. LG said the G7’s sensor isn’t as wide as it used to be, but it does take better pictures.

Then there’s a new AI Camera mode on the LG G7 that uses artificial intelligence to take better photos, adjust lighting or automatically add filters. It can recognize a situation and change camera settings for the best possible photo. We’ll test this further in our full review.

You’ll also enjoy optical image stabilization with both the front and rear cameras, even in video, HDR mode, and portrait-style bokeh photos. Just like the iPhone X. The front-facing camera is also better. So while the G6 still takes pretty good pictures, you’ll want the G7 if you like to take them.

LG G7 vs LG G6: Release Date and Price

In closing, when can you get LG’s new phone and how much will it cost? We don’t have all the answers yet, but the wait is almost over. In fact, you can get the new LG G7 ThinQ from most carriers in the United States starting June 1st. Pre-orders start on May 24.

LG has yet to reveal pricing or full availability, but we’re assuming all carriers in the US will have it starting June 1 for around $699. Not only is it a good price, it’s also cheaper than most of its Android competitors.

As a comparison, the LG G6 is almost a year old and still available on most carriers. You can get the LG G6 for just $450 from T-Mobile today, which is a pretty good deal. However, if you want the best of the best from LG, wait a few weeks and get the LG G7.
