LG G4 Edition: 6 Things You Should Know

This morning the brand new LG G4 was finally revealed. announced After months of leaks, rumors, speculation and LG’s teasers, and now we know all the details about this impressive new flagship smartphone. Given the LG G4 is official and will soon take on the iPhone, Galaxy S6 and everything else in the competition, below are six things buyers should know.

Last year the LG G3 was announced in late May, and more than a month later, it fell far behind the competition. However, this version was earlier than the G2 before it, and the G2 came even earlier than the original Optimus G. end of May

Back in early February, the new LG G4 smartphone was somewhat confirmed by LG after some early rumors, and now that’s all gone. It has a stunning new 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quantum HD (2k) display, a powerful 6-core processor, and a camera that they claim is the best of any phone around. Today, the all-new LG G4 has been fully unveiled for the first time in six countries simultaneously and at an event in New York City. Still, we knew exactly what to expect as LG was gradually announcing the new display, the 16-megapixel F1.8 camera, genuine leather and more leading up to the event. That said, there are still things you’ll want to know about this great new smartphone for 2015.

The leather is different from Apple, Samsung and HTC with metal but offers something premium but a totally unique and exclusive look to resemble the Moto X and is a great new option for potential buyers. The phone’s camera should be among the best, it runs the latest version of Android and has a ton to offer potential buyers.

Design

As you now know, the LG G4 looks almost identical to last year in terms of overall design, but has received a complete overhaul in every aspect. The screen is better, the design has been improved, and it gains a new diamond cut faux metal design, as well as six all-new genuine leather hand-stitched backrests that cover the removable battery and micro SD slot. Yes, it has a removable battery and a micro SD for expandable storage, something the Galaxy S6 is definitely missing.

The new LG G4 will stick to the same thin bezels around a 5.5-inch device, improving the camera and keeping the buttons on the back. It will still be made of plastic. Similar to Moto X leather, LG has a new design material. Below is an image of the three regular color options; Silver, Black and Gold plus six all-new leather options. They look and feel great, but with time, wear and tear etc. We’ll have to see if they can hold up.

It’s all said and done, it will have almost the same design as previous years, just with some changes to the look, textures and finish. Not to mention that everything is upgraded across the board. The only thing not improved is that we have the same 3,000 mAh battery, but with Android Lollipop and a more efficient Snapdragon processor we can expect better battery life from the G3. You’ll still get sleek bezels, buttons on the back, and a single rear-facing speaker. We were hoping for a little redesign but maybe that will happen in 2016. But for now, we like the thin bezel, glossy screen and new leather look.

Some early rumors suggested a frenzy curved screen Similar to the LG G Flex 2 and others have claimed it will have a smaller 5.3 inch display with an extremely high 3k resolution display. However, this did not happen. LG played it safe (which was probably a good thing) and we have a perfectly sized 5.5-inch screen with such thin bezels that the device is slightly larger than the Galaxy S6, a phone with a much smaller 5.1-inch screen. Same size, but greatly improved. There’s a new LG “spring design” with a slight bend, but we wouldn’t go so far as to call it a curved screen. This should protect the device from drops, make it more durable, and provide a comfortable curve in the hand.

The G4 has the same size and resolution as last year’s LG G3, but offers big improvements. According to the LG press release, this new 5.5-inch Quad-HD display has achieved a “quantum leap” in color gamut and brightness. They even call it a “Quantum HD display”. The G4 display is brighter, with incredibly rich and striking colors and inky blacks. It’s a pleasure to use it from our limited hands-on time with it. All this while still being more efficient and easier on battery life. Aside from being thinner and offering improved touch functionality and sensitivity.

It has the new Advanced In-Cell Touch technology that allows it to respond to touches even when there is water on it. Finally, LG promises more accurate colors than last year’s QHD panel on the G3, offering a color gamut of 120%, a contrast increase of 50%, and a brightness increase of 30%. It may not be as good as the Galaxy S6 as it’s slightly larger at the same resolution, but this is one of the best displays on any mobile device to date.

The slightly faded screen of the LG G3 has been removed, viewing angles are much better, and those looking forward to the LG G4 can rest assured knowing they have one of the best smartphone displays on the market.

Skin, Battery and Micro SD Slot

The brand new LG G4 comes in three regular plastic colors, but also has a new genuine leather back that is hand-stitched and takes 12 weeks each to complete, which is 4 days for regular plastic backs. It comes in six colors and looks great. LG keeps saying See Great, Feel Great, and it’s true. You must see and use this phone to truly appreciate the new leather materials. Like the Moto X 2014, only better.

The LG G4 will have a large 3,000mAh removable battery just like last year, a micro SD slot for storage expansion up to 128GB, and all this is possible as the back will still be removable. Something that many are not happy to lose on the new Galaxy S6. It has an improved display, a new graphics RAM chip that lets you view photos without wasting CPU battery, and more. They claim some of the best battery life of any phone available. If you’re looking for an alternative, the G4 is worth considering.

And as you can see above, there will be leather options, while the back is still plastic. We’re seeing six different colors so far, but that may change in the near future. The six colors shown today are fascinating and hopefully all available from all carriers in the USA.

Camera

Speaking of specifications, an extremely important aspect of any smartphone is the camera. The LG G3 had a decent 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and introduced a new laser autofocus that promises some of the best and fastest camera performance on the market. It was great, but with its F1.9 lens, the new Galaxy S6 is one of the best of all smartphones to date. Most phones are above 2.0 with f-stop, which is the speed of the sensor and how well it captures details and light.

The G4 one-ups is Samsung, and the new G4 has an F1.8 lens, the same laser autofocus, and much better optical image stabilization than 2014’s G3. It is a device with the fastest sensors so you can always capture precious moments and you can take pictures with your voice, volume keys on the back and more. We’ve only had a little time with the G4 so far, but the camera is quite capable and proves to be one of its best features.

With its F1.8 camera lens, the LG G4 should shoot incredibly fast and accurately, be great in low-light conditions and deliver clear and sharp images no matter the situation. Oh, and we can’t forget the facade. The Galaxy S6 has an excellent 5-megapixel front camera that’s better than most phones’ rear cameras, and LG outclassed them here too. The LG G4 features an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies and wide-angle selfies, as well as tons of software tweaks that make for fun photos for social sharing. They added more gesture control and more for hands-free shutter options.

Features

Specifications and numbers on a piece of paper aren’t everything, and while a device that’s stable, smooth, and has a good battery life is more important, some still enjoy the cold, hard facts. With that in mind, everything inside the LG G4 smartphone is here.

Of course, these are just numbers and we’ll have to spend more than a few minutes with him before we say more. So far the G4 is promising and runs extremely smoothly on Android 5.1 Lollipop device. Having top-of-the-line features is important, but having a device that’s smooth, stable, and has good battery life is crucial. The G4 has a great look and feel, a nice camera, a micro SD card slot and much more. This is one of the best phones to date and should compete nicely with the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9.

Price and Release Date

The event is still ongoing and LG is busy talking about the impressive new F1.8 camera lens, leather materials and more. So far we’ve heard of a release date in late May, which could extend to June, but we’ll have to wait and see. We’ll update when LG announces pricing, availability, release dates or anything else.

Most likely, we can expect the traditional $199 with a new 2-year contract and exact pricing of $599, but no official information has been released yet.
