This week Google took some time to finally announce when Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be officially released, and now we’re hearing from companies like HTC that have confirmed the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update release schedule for the HTC One M8 and HTC One M9.
During Google’s event, the company confirmed that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will begin rolling out to Nexus devices on October 5th, starting next week. This doesn’t include any HTC phones, but it does mean that Google’s Android 6.0 code will go to the Android Open Source Project and manufacturers like Samsung, LG and HTC can start rolling out updates for their devices.
Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, announced All HTC devices that will eventually receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, including the release date of some of its most popular smartphones. Read on for more details.
A leaked listing surfaced last week containing a few details regarding software updates for many HTC phones, but now all these owners can be assured that they’ve learned the real details directly from the HTC America President himself.
In a post on Twitter, HTC’s Jason Mackenzie mentioned that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is coming to many HTC devices very soon, and that the last two flagship smartphones will receive updates before the end of the year. Essentially, it promises a 90-day window when updates will arrive.

As owners can see above, the tweet confirms that the somewhat popular HTC One M8 and newer HTC One M9 will see Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates before the end of 2015. it comes out before the end of the year, but it may not reach all users until then.
Typically HTC releases updates first outside the United States and then in the United States, but these comments came from the Americas division. This means that most likely all HTC One M8 and M9 units in carriers in the US will be able to see updates anytime between today and early January 2016. Similar to what we saw with Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop this year, it gave HTC some leeway for potential delays.
The list actually includes 12 devices, most of them relatively new smartphones. If yours is not listed, it may not see Android 6.0 Marshmallow, otherwise it may be added to a different list later.
With Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google made many minor changes and improvements over Android 5.1 Lollipop. Everything from the lock screen, home screen, notification bar, volume and permission controls, native fingerprint scanner support, Android Pay, better performance or battery life, and tons of other minor changes or security patches. However, HTC has it all covered with its own HTC Sense UI; this is one of the reasons why it takes up to 90 days, if not longer, for updates to be applied and included in software updates for owners.
Now that Google has confirmed Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be out very soon and a release is set for next week, we can expect multiple manufacturers and carriers to come forward with more details and update schedules. This is the first from HTC and we will hear more in the near future. Stay tuned for more details, and as soon as we see a solid HTC One M9 Android 6.0 update release date, we’ll be sure to share all the information once it becomes available.
