HTC Android 9 Pie Update Details

For those still waiting, here’s what you need to know about HTC Android Pie updates. Google released Android 9 Pie in August 2018, and here almost a year and a half later, quite a few HTC phones still don’t have it, but are getting it right before the years are up.

“Will my HTC phone get Android 9?” If you’re wondering, here’s what we know. And I don’t even need to start using Android 10, which is even further away.

Unfortunately HTC still mostly stays silent on software updates. Last year, the company confirmed that at least three devices will receive the new update, but now it’s December 2019 and we’ve only seen a few arrive. Google’s old Android 9 update is loaded with new features, smart controls, and more. Unfortunately, even though most phones are now getting Android 10, many are still waiting to get or try these features.

We know that at least four HTC phones will eventually get a slice of cake, and first update arrived At the end of November. Then, popular smartphones from all major manufacturers will get a free update to Android 9 Pie sometime in 2019, eventually, maybe hopefully. As you can see above, HTC has confirmed the update for four smartphones. However, they have a bunch of other phones that we think should get the update. Typically, devices receive updates for about 2 years from the day they are released. Not to mention that Google requires 18 months of support from manufacturers.

HTC Android 9 Update Release Dates

Your next question is about when the update will arrive, what to expect next, or what’s new. Unfortunately, we don’t have any new information on when you’ll actually be getting Android Pie for most of these phones.

Basically, whenever they come. This post is from August 10. Now, more than nine months later, with the Android Q update approaching, HTC has reposted it on Twitter, basically saying they’re “making sure the update is compatible with HTC phones.” This is a sad and disappointing answer.

We wanted to share the status on the Android 9 update. HTC is currently working to ensure the update is compatible with our phones and we expect a release for U11, U11+ and U12+ customers starting Q2’19. The exact timing varies according to the operators’ availability in different countries.

In previous years, HTC promised to update within 90 days or before the end of the year, and it delivered on those promises. When Google bought the hardware division, we thought it would help updates come faster. Instead, they take even longer. From delivering updates in 90 days, they took almost 11-12 months here in 2018-19.

HTC’s latest and greatest HTC U12+, intended to compete with the Galaxy S9 and iPhone Xs from 2018, didn’t get the Pie until the end of June. The flagship HTC U11 from the previous year is getting it as of a year and a half late December 2019, the same day Samsung delivered Android 10 to the Galaxy S10. Yep, HTC is extremely behind and doesn’t seem to care. Wait times are even longer for US models, so we don’t recommend buying at this point.

No software updates should take a year and a half to arrive, HTC, none.

HTC Android 10 Betas and Update

There’s a small chance we’ll see some Android 10 betas from HTC, but that’s also unknown. We’ve seen betas of these in the past, but not many, and we haven’t seen any public betas for Android 9 Pie. Be happy that at least a few phones still get Android Pie, and we’ll be revisiting Android 10 sometime in 2020.

What’s New in Android 9 Pie

There are many new Android 9.0 features you can use to do more with your phone and tablet. Users will enjoy bulk and smarter notifications, autofill improvements and tons of “smart” features. Not to mention new gesture navigation controls, digital wellbeing options, Google Assistant improvements, themes and notch support. This is on top of the usual performance and battery life changes.

Additionally, we expect HTC to add some of its own exciting new features on top of Android 9. This either improves the existing options or makes them better with the help of Pie. Then expect all HTC OS updates to include everything detailed above plus a few improvements, bug fixes and more.

Currently, almost every new HTC phone from the past few years is running Android 8.0 Oreo or Android 9 Pie. There are only a few phones on the market, and most of them qualify for Pie. However, Google has already released the Android 10 update in August. Since October we’ve been enjoying the Android 10 beta on devices like the Galaxy S10, where HTC phones are still waiting for Pie.
