HTC 10 Setup Guide: 7 Steps to Get Started

The new HTC 10 smartphone will arrive from US carriers now or soon, new owners will have questions to learn and more. The HTC 10 works great out of the box, but here we’ll share some initial setup tips to get started and get the most out of your new phone.

On April 12, HTC introduced HTC 10, the best smartphone of recent years. With an improved new design, better camera, larger 5.2-inch screen and all-day battery life. I also have a fingerprint for enhanced security, a clean version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow and more.

By following our HTC 10 setup guide and a few tips below, owners can set up the phone for the best experience in about 10 minutes. Everything from settings, disabling what you don’t need, using the fingerprint scanner for added security, and more. This is our HTC 10 setup guide.

The HTC 10 has a larger 5.2-inch Quad-HD display, a large 3,000mAh battery, a new 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, impressive dual speakers, a micro SD card, 4GB of RAM, and a powerful Snapdragon 820 processor. . everything works smoothly. It’s one of the best phones of 2016 and we’re going to make it even better here.

It still has HTC Sense over Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but most of the software has the stock interface as Google intended. That said, there are a few settings, customization, security and battery life options that HTC 10 owners should look into. HTC has packed a lot into this phone and we’re going to make it a little easier to search through settings. Lets start.

better security

An option that has been on Android smartphones for years and that many prefer not to use is a password or pattern on the lock screen. To make things even better, HTC has removed the typical buttons for a dedicated fingerprint scanner under the screen. Owners will want to use it too.

Setting up a fingerprint is super easy and only takes a few finger taps during setup or in the settings menu. Below is a screenshot of where to do this if owners skipped the process during initial setup.

Go inside and follow the instructions. We recommend three, both thumbs and one or two index fingers when standing on the table, for ease of use. It also requires a code to access these settings after backup and fingerprint enrollment.

HTC 10 has a great fingerprint scanner which is very easy to set up. Just 8-10 finger taps and registers instead of 15+ like Samsung. Make sure to move your finger at different angles, and if you’re using a case, do so with the case on for the best forward-looking experience.

Backup and Restore

While we won’t get into the topic of transferring from an old device to the new 10, we will explain a few simple steps you can take to keep your new phone backed up and ready to go. Google’s backup options will be specified during setup as we recommend most users agree to, but you can always control more backup and sync options from the settings later on.

Scroll down for backup and reset in settings. This is where you can turn Google’s backup solution on or off. It’s not an all-in-one solution, but it will backup (and restore to a new device) your WiFi passwords, app data (and game saves), wallpapers, and other settings. This is extremely convenient. If users are from an older HTC smartphone, we even have the option to restore from HTC Backup.

Disable Blinkfeed

HTC Blinkfeed is nice but not for everyone. Swipe left on the home screen and Blinkfeed is a news and information gathering tool. Gathering information from news sources, sports scores, Twitter, Facebook and more in one place. Some love it, others want to do things their own way. If so, disable or remove it to save space and save battery or data.

Long press the screen and select “Manage home screen panels” at the bottom of the popup. Swipe left to Blinkfeed and select remove. This completely clears this screen, which can then be re-added and filled with apps and widgets.

Blinkfeed is nice, but some want news and information from other sources. If so, this will update frequently and also consume battery life and data. Disable it if you don’t need it. This will also improve performance across the board.

Android Device Manager

Trying to find a lost or stolen smartphone is difficult, but not if owners install Android Device Manager when they first get a phone. Similar to FindMyiPhone, Android Device Manager does it all. Almost no installation after downloading the app. Google Play storethen let Android device manager find your lost phone if needed.

This is crucial for an HTC 10 lost. Users can access ADM from another Android device, tablet or a PC to locate a lost or stolen device, then track and recover it. Even if it’s not enabled, just type “Find My Phone” in the Google search bar while signed into your Gmail account in Chrome and it will find the closest location. Pretty neat little trick that Google released earlier this year.

Android Device Manager has other useful features as well. Owners can remotely lock HTC 10, wipe and wipe all data in case of theft, or even ring the phone at maximum volume if it gets lost somewhere. All of these can be done using Android Device Manager site From a PC, tablet or other phone.

This is one of those small steps that many users overlook, but if you need it, you’ll be glad you took 2-3 minutes to make sure it’s ready to go. Don’t skip this.

Set Mobile Data Limits

Another good idea to keep things organized and on track is to set mobile data limits. It can save you a headache and money down the road. Whether you have a 2GB data plan with Sprint or Verizon or a family plan with T-Mobile that shares 10GB of data across multiple devices, it’s always wise to set limits. This way, users won’t be faced with a huge smartphone bill at the end of the month.

This will prevent owners from using too much data on YouTube, Netflix or watching Game of Thrones excessively. Set alerts based on data usage like 5GB and that’s it. Not many think about it as most places have WiFi, but if you’ve had a large bill before, here are steps owners will want to take to prevent this from happening again.

Improve Battery Life

Aside from the large 5.2-inch screen, one of the biggest impacts on battery life is Blinkfeed and Google location services, having so many apps syncing 24/7. Whether your phone is always tracking your location to deliver weather updates, or using Google Assistant and Google Maps for directions or navigation, this is a huge drain on battery life. In Android 4.4 KitKat, Google added a new location option here that allows more control, and the battery saver option is your best route to go. I’m always amazed at how much battery life this simple setting saves. Changing location to use WiFi and Network, not GPS. This is great.

Battery saver mode turns off GPS, so turn-by-turn navigation may not be as accurate or may need to be re-enabled, but for those who rarely use navigation, Battery saver mode is your best bet. Once here, tap the three-dot menu button at the top, select the “Scan” option and turn off Bluetooth and WiFi scanning. This little trick not many people know about, but it saves a little more battery life. Our phones scan for WiFi and Bluetooth (even when turned off) to get location data, improve Google Maps, and do other things for Google. This is what makes their service so great at the expense of our battery life. Close.

Users can also go to settings > display > and turn the brightness down to 40% instead of auto, which can extend battery life and extend phone usage until the next day without recharging. It’s another good idea to see how often Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and other apps sync, and if it happens too often, it will cause your device to constantly wake up and decrease battery life. The HTC 10 has a decent 3,000mAh battery with fast charging, but if we can do better, so can we.

HTC Theme Store

The HTC 10 runs the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with minor changes here and there. It looks stock, but it’s not. It’s still involved in HTC’s UI changes. But like last year we have a Theme store that will completely change everything.

Go to the application tray and find the multicolored round “Themes” icon and its application. Start it, sign in if you want and check out all the themes. These change the entire look and feel in seconds, including icons and settings. Material themes make the phone look like stock Android, or choose from a plethora of options to make HTC 1o your own. The theme store is one of our favorite aspects of the HTC 10, so give it a try today.

Most of the themes are free and you can always revert to the original theme in seconds if the changes are too much.

Other Steps

Of course owners will need to sign in to a Google account and get all their contacts, information and apps, but there are tons of other options you might want to consider. Google Assistant is an excellent option worth enabling. As it provides the information you may need before you ask, directions, hands-free voice controls and much more. Google Assistant can be activated by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or by long pressing the fingerprint scanner. This also uses Google Now on Tap, which is nice.

Here we’ve just reviewed a few important steps you’ll want to take when you first get the HTC 10.
