Guide to Creating and Managing Contact Groups on Samsung Phones

We organize our notes, documents, files and so on on our phones. But the thought of organizing the same contacts rarely crosses our minds. If you’re one of the few who want to group and organize contacts, Samsung phones offer a great experience. Grouping contacts makes it easy to communicate with a specific group of people. Let’s see how to create and manage contact groups on Samsung phones.

You can group your contacts so you can send a group text or email and assign a common ringtone to all group members. For example, I have a separate ringtone for my Family group. When a family member calls, without looking at my phone, I know it’s family member and no spam calls.

Excited about how to use groups in Samsung Contacts & Phone app? Let’s find the answer.

Where to Find Groups for Contacts on Samsung Phones

You can find the contact groups feature in the Samsung Contacts & Phone app. Open the Samsung Phone app and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom. Scroll down a bit and you will have your Groups. Tap to view, create and edit groups.

How to Create New Contact Groups

Samsung offers several predefined groups that cannot be deleted or renamed. These include Family, Emergency contacts, Starred and Unassigned on Android. If the name seems appropriate, you can add people to these groups or create your own.

There are two ways to create a group. You can do this from the Contacts app or the Phone app. In the Phone app, go to the People tab and tap on Groups as shown in the section above. Tap the Create button at the top to create a new group.

Adding or Removing Members from Contact Groups

There are three ways to do this. First, you can add members when creating a group as shown above. There are two other methods as well.

Method 1: By Editing the Group

When you edit a group, members can be added or removed. To do this, open the group from the Contacts or Phone app, as shown in Where to find groups. Tap the group you want to edit. Tap the Edit icon in the group. Press Add member to add a contact. To remove a member, tap the red remove (-) icon next to the member. Tap on Save to save the changes.

Method 2: From Individual Contacts

When editing contacts individually, you can assign a group to the contact. For this, open any contact from the Contacts or Phone app that you want to add to a group. Tap the Edit button.

How to Check Assigned Groups

Often times, you want to verify if a person has been added to any group. You can do this in two ways. Open the group. If there are many people in the group, use the search icon to search for the person.

The aforementioned method is a bit tedious if a person belongs to more than one group. So the other method is to open the contact directly from the Contact or Phone app. You will see the groups assigned under the Groups section. If the contact is not assigned any groups, you will not see the Group option.

How to Change Group Name and Ringtone

You can rename groups that you have created yourself at any time. However, group names made by Samsung cannot be edited. To rename a group, open the group and tap the Edit icon. Enter a new name. You can add, remove or change a ringtone for the group on the same screen. The same ringtone will be used for all group members.

How to Text or Email All Group Contacts

One of the best benefits of creating a group on Samsung is sending a mass text or email. To do this, open the required group from the Contacts or Phone app as shown above. Tap the three-dot icon. Select Send message or Send email. Add your message and send. The message or email will be sent to all contacts in that group.

How to Delete a Group

To delete a contact group you created on your Samsung phone, open the group. Tap the three-dot icon. Select Delete From It. You will be asked if you want to delete only the group or both the group and its members. Choose the first option if you don’t want to delete the contacts from your phone. If you want to delete contacts in bulk, continue with the second one.
