Google Translate: AI now improves translations on Android even when you’re offline

The Google Translate app on Android and iOS is evolving: the firm announced on its blog that its new artificial intelligence-powered translation technology called NMT (Neural Machine Translation) is now in offline mode. Google explains on its blog: “This means that this technology will launch directly into Google Translate apps on your Android or iOS device, so you can get high-quality translations even when you don’t have an internet connection.”

Google Translate’s offline mode lets you use the app when you’re traveling and don’t want to use your data, for example. It also has the advantage of processing your data locally rather than sending information to Google servers. The biggest advantage of NMT translations over others is that they allow you to analyze and translate whole sentences instead of translating sentences piecemeal. Translation takes context into account, resulting in text that is easier to read and more grammatically correct.

However, the translations are not perfect and always contain errors, although they are less numerous. Translations in AI are not exclusive to Google, as its highly successful competitor DeepL has shown. NMT translations are available in offline mode and will support 59 languages ​​(not listed) in the coming days. To take advantage of these new NMT translations:

• Open the Google Translate app on your Android or iOS smartphone
• Tap the source or target language above the text field
• A list of languages ​​is then displayed with an icon on the right that allows you to download the famous file for translations.
