Google Play Store: a new loyalty program “wins” paid apps and games

How about earning points every time you buy an app? It looks like Google is looking to increase purchases in the Play Store in Japan with a new loyalty program called Google Play Points. Concretely, you collect points when you make any purchase from official stores (Google Play Store, Google Play Books, Google Play Movies) or drop into an in-app purchase or subscription. These provide access to levels that define how these points are earned and how well they qualify.

So there are Bronze (up to 249 points), Silver (250 to 999 points), Gold (1000 – 3999 points), Platinum (4000 – 14999) and Diamond (more than 15000 points). Thus, the scale starts from 1 point earned for 100 yen (about 0.76 euros) spent. Each level allows you to earn 0.25 additional points per 100 Yen spent. So at Diamond level you get 2 points for every 100 Yen. In addition to this scale, upgrading gives access to gifts:

• Silver : 300 Yen credit for apps and 100 Yen for movie rentals
• Gold : 300 Yen credit for applications, 500 Yen for e-books and 100 Yen for movie rentals
• Platinum : 300 Yen credit for applications, 500 Yen for e-books and 100 Yen for movie rentals
• Diamond : 300 Yen credit for applications, 500 Yen for e-books and 100 Yen for movie rentals

So far, the service has only been launched in Japan. However, the presence of English support pages indicates that Google plans to export the service internationally.
