End the clap for Google Photos’ subscription printing service. Since 2017, Google has made it possible to order prints of photos and albums. The service is available in North America as well as in many countries including France. However, the democratization of the smartphone – with everything implying a change in our relationship with photography and video – seems to have dealt a heavy blow to photo printing.
That hasn’t stopped Google from innovating until recently. In February, Google launched a unique subscription photo printing service. The idea was simple: you pay $8 a month and Google’s artificial intelligence automatically selects 10 of your best photos from the previous month. Frankly, if the market for photo printing isn’t huge already, the market for automatic photo printing by subscription is even less so.
Customers received an email from Google this morning announcing the imminent end of service: “We are writing to warn you. As of June 30, 2020, we will end our monthly photo printing trial program.“explains Google. However, the platform suggests that the service may soon resurface with another formula (although we’re not sure if that’s really the case): “We really need to make improvements based on your feedback”.
And Google concludes: “Although we will be ending our trial program, we hope that in the meantime, the prints you’ve been taking have brought some joy to you”. Those who print their photos can be trusted: it’s always possible to print photos and albums on demand, whether you order them from Google or – even better – from other stores near you.
