Google Photos 4.32.1 adds a very useful new feature: the ability to manually tag people in photos. Until then, Google Photos offered to automatically identify any faces that AI detects in photos. Sometimes with failures or shortcomings. The new feature, which makes it possible to recognize people that the algorithm does not recognize, to tag people for whom you have only a handful of photos, also simplifies this task on images containing a large number of faces.
It is also possible to edit these tags later. But this feature has a limit: it still relies on Google Photos AI. In other words, you can’t tag anything if Google Photos doesn’t detect a face in an image. Also, you can never tag a random part of the image.
How to tag a face manually
It’s very simple:
- Open Google Photos 4.32.1
- Open a photo you want to tag
- To do Slap bottom-up to bring up the action menu
- You should then see the recognized face avatars – tap the pencil icon at the top of this section
- Tap one of the available avatars to add it
- You can then associate or add that face to an already existing contact.
If you want to edit or delete a sticker, the procedure is similar: go to the pencil icon in the actions menu and tap the detected avatars to access more options.
How to download APK
Frequently, this update has a native component and a server-side component. Therefore, it is recommended to update Google Photos to the latest version 4.32.1, which you can do directly from the Google Play Store or by downloading the APK of the application from the Techspot site. The manual tag is being deployed, so it may take a few more days for the functionality to appear in your app despite this update. Click one of the links below to update your version of Google Photos:
