Google Photos: New image organization is coming, time to sort

Google Photos AI

We’ve been talking to you for a few days now about Pegs or Stacks, in Shakespeare’s language, this new way to organize images in Photos. This game, which will be released in beta at the end of October, is based on a simple but extremely effective concept. All similar photos taken at approximately the same time are stored in a single folder, freeing up space in your gallery.

We later learned that it might be possible to add only one or two photos per stack, which doesn’t seem like much. The idea is then that the user chooses which of the two photos they would prefer to place on said stack. But this photo may be fake, or at least no longer relevant. Indeed, Google has clearly started rolling out this functionality, which makes the situation a little clearer.

Batteries are coming to Google Photos

Indeed, one Reddit user notes in a post that he got this functionality via a recent update to his Pixel 8. In the screenshot, we see a presentation window informing him that he can now do this. “automatically group similar photos with stacks of images”. The popup then adds: “Enable image stacking to organize similar photos taken at the same time.”

Additionally, this pop-up contains a total of 6 similar photos, indicating that it would be possible to fit more than two images in a single Stack. To open the latter, you will need to click on a small icon in the upper right corner of the featured image. If you do not want to change the screen of the application, you will also be able to disable the option in Settings. We will still have to wait for the global distribution of the functionality to confirm all this information.
