In an effort to encourage users to move away from rival messaging apps like WhatsApp, Google has been working to improve the Messages experience in recent months. As of January 2023, we can now create discussion groups that bring together nearly a hundred people.
In April 2023, the app gained some welcome new features, starting with the possibility of reducing the description of sent photos. Additionally, Google announced that group conversations will finally be encrypted in Messages; This was a layer of security that was sorely lacking.
However, our colleagues at Android Headlines have discovered a new feature currently in testing on the latest beta version of Google Messages, “20230615_02_RC00”.
RCS chats finally highlighted in Google Messages
If you’re a regular Google Messages user, you know that there’s currently no way to quickly separate RCS conversations from regular SMS chats. The only way to find out is to start speaking directly or texting the recipient.
After this, Messages sent or received in RCS format will be accompanied by a padlock icon. Moreover, when you start writing a message, either a lock icon or SMS text will appear next to the send button.
Thanks to this small changeDetecting RCS conversations will be much easier in your discussion list. When you open Google Messages, this lock icon will also be placed on your recipients’ profile pictures. More precisely, it will be displayed in the lower right corner, for both individual and group discussions.
As a reminder, Apple is still determined to ignore RCS despite the passage of the Digital Market Act in Europe, a law specifically aimed at standardizing different messaging services. The Apple brand raises security issues, especially considering that the RCS protocol does not effectively encrypt conversations.
