While Google offers a number of new features that will come to Android smartphones and smart watches, Mountain View has another surprise for Google Messages users.
In fact, the company is proud to announce that RCS, the communications protocol dedicated to eliminating classic SMS/MMS, has surpassed one billion users on the messaging app. By the way, let us remind you that RCS is available not only in Google Messages but also in many messaging services such as Messenger and WhatsApp.
Apple recently caved in and confirmed that RCS will be adopted on the iPhone starting in 2024. It is enough to foresee an even more significant increase in the number of users. To celebrate this “anniversary”, the web giant plans to launch at least 7 new features that will enrich your RCS conversations. Let’s take a look.
New features are coming to Google Messages
Turn your photos into emojis with Photomoji
We’re starting with Photomoji, a feature that lets you turn your personal photos into emojis, thanks to Google’s artificial intelligence. For example, if you want to create an emoji featuring your four-legged best friend, just press the Create button in the emoji bar. Then choose a photo and let the AI cut out your cat/dog and turn it into a Photomoji. All you have to do is add it to your messages.

Express your mood with voice messages with Voice Moods
We continue with Voice Moods, a feature that Google recently introduced. Simply put, it allows you to add a personalized background to your voice messages. According to the company, the integration of this tool was used to improve the sound quality of voice messages.

Screen Effects for full screen reactions
With Screen Effects, some messages will be able to react in full screen. Be careful, we are talking about simple themed messages here, like “It’s snowing” or “I love you” (snowflakes or hearts will cover the screen). In total, Google has planned around fifteen hidden Screen Effects that users must find.

Custom Bubbles to customize the color of speech bubbles
Google makes your conversations even more personal with Private Bubbles. A simple idea is hidden behind this name: you will be able to customize the background of Google Messages as well as the color of the speech bubbles. It is practical, for example, to distinguish cats (family, friends, couple, etc.).

Emoji is being renewed
Same as Screen Effects, Reaction Effects allow you to display reactions to a message through a full-screen animation. A simple thumbs up is enough to give it more importance. Additionally, Google plans to introduce animated emojis as well.

More personalization for your profile
Finally, we end this overview with the new features coming to your profile. Thanks to the new Profiles feature, users will be able to personalize their names and photos associated with their phone numbers. Useful for changing the appearance of all Google services linked to your phone details.

According to Google, these various new features have been available in the latest beta version of Google Messages since November 30, 2023. We don’t yet know when they will arrive in the general public version of the app.
