Google is testing a brand new test bar design for the Messages app in beta. This now covers almost the entire width of the screen, and the save messages button is pinned to the right side. A change that destabilizes more than one person.
Like all messaging apps, Google Messages regularly tests new features to stay in the race. Often these improve the user experience, such as the ability to send photos in Ultra HDR. Other times, it is enough to slightly change the interface design to make it more readable and intuitive. The web version has recently been given this treatment.
Now it’s the Android version’s turn to change its appearance a bit. More specifically, it’s the appearance of the text bar that’s changed in the latest beta version of Google Messages. Previously, it was anchored to the right and took up approximately two-thirds of the screen width. On the left are various buttons for sending photos and other stickers, while emojis and voice messages are stored in the text bar on the right.
The new design of Google Messages will confuse you
In the latest beta, Google Messages is shaking up this organization to make more room for the text bar. This now takes up almost the entire width, except for the record voicemails button on the right, which completes it. All other buttons are now in the text bar: emojis on the left, Magic Compose, media and stickers on the right.
As you can understand, this new interface carries the risk of disturbing its first users. Some have noted that it looks strange to first tap a bar on the left and then pin messages to the right side. But it’s clear that this new design cleans up the formula a bit and makes everything more readable. It remains to be seen whether Google will adopt this permanently for the general public.
