Remember: Google Maps dark mode first appeared in 2018. The dark mode, which was originally reserved for the beta version of the maps app, was quickly tested by Google teams on a larger scale. In 2019, Google also promised the arrival of a true dark mode for Google Maps.
Finally, the search giant brought the dark mode to a wide range of Android smartphones at the end of December 2020. But until now, most users still and always lacked this long-awaited feature. After months of testing, Google has finally decided to implement dark mode on all terminals equipped with Google Maps.
How to enable Google Maps dark mode on Android?
Google is proudly announcing the arrival of dark mode in Maps in a post on its blog on February 23, 2021. “With the Google Maps dark theme coming soon to all Android users around the world, you can give your eyes a well-deserved break and save battery life” It pleases Google. This innovation reduce eye strain by reducing the emission of certain wavelengths of light and extending the battery life of smartphones with OLED screens. In the post, Google explains how to enable Google Maps dark mode:
- Open the Google Maps app
- Click on your Google profile icon (top right next to the search bar)
- enter inside Settings
- find in Theme
- press on always dark theme
option goes “Down the lights when navigating maps, exploring or completing quests”, notes Google. This is clearly a server-side update. There is nothing you can do to force the option to come to your smartphone. Did you get to the dark side? We welcome your feedback in the comments.
