Released by Android N developer preview 3, Version 5.1 of the Google Keyboard brings something new we’ve all been waiting for, themes that allow you to customize your interface.
Google Keyboard version 5.0 brings a host of new features, starting with one-handed mode, while version 5.1 finally brings customization. The app now features a new section. preconfigured themes adding a little more color to the whole but that’s not all. You will also be able to create your own background with the image you choose.
Most virtual keyboards for Android are customizable, but so far Google’s keyboard has remained very simple and somewhat unimaginative. A bug has now been fixed, and that’s exactly what was missing, thanks to themes that let it oscillate between customization and functionality while making it more fun. A keyboard that now has nothing to envy certain third-party apps on the Play Store.
Note that the themes are also customizable, and to add a background image to your keyboard, simply select a part of your screen as in the image above. Thus, the proportions of the image are preserved and there is no distortion effect. As is often the case with Google, everything is well thought out.

Note that this 5.1 version of the Google keyboard is not yet available in the Play Store but is already possible. Install using the APK file Excerpt from N’s latest developer preview by clicking here. Keep in mind, though, that its compatibility is very random from one model to another.. The new keyboard also seems to work under Android Marshmallow, specifically Samsung Galaxy S7 and HTC 10, as well as terminals under Lollipop.
