Google Extends Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Lifespan

They probably won’t get Android P, but Google has extended the lifespan of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Google recently rolled out Android 8.0 Oreo to the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, and both are expected to be upgraded to new Oreo versions as Google improves the operating system. That said, neither device is expected to be upgraded to the next major Android update, an update that will likely (at least initially) be referred to as Android P.

the company says cannot guarantee Android version updates for Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X users after September 2017. This means that Android Oreo will probably be their last major update. Unless, of course, Google changes its mind.

Google also said it plans to extend security updates to the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X until September 2018. These plans have changed.

One last update for Google Support page It states that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have no guaranteed security updates after November 2018. The same can be said for guaranteed phone and online support. There was a language change first noticed with Droid-Life.

What this means is that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X should receive security updates from Google and carrier partners for at least next year. After November 2018, support for the two devices will likely end.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P should also receive all the maintenance updates that Google has released between now and the release of next year’s Android operating system.

The company is reportedly working on an Android 8.1 update that could be released on October 4 alongside the Pixel 2, according to rumors. The new version of Oreo recently surfaced in a Google app beta.

Last year, Google revealed Android 7.1 Nougat alongside the Pixel and Pixel XL and put it in beta before a public release for Nexus devices.

The Android 7.1 Nougat update brought more than just bug fixes to Nexus phones and tablets. The upgrade also brought Google Daydream VR support, expanded emoji support, Night Light and many other changes.
