Drive, Google’s cloud office suite and file storage and sharing service, introduces another new feature that will save a lot of time for independent professionals or companies who frequently share documents with outside parties. It is now possible to set expiration dates for each file or folder directly during sharing.

In the pile of files we process and share on a daily basis, it is easy to forget who has access to this or that document or folder. Permissions granted must be reviewed over time and canceled if necessary. If it is already possible to set an expiration date, The operation is boring right now.. The new Drive functionality allows you to define an accurate cancellation date upon initiation of sharing.

It will be easier to set access rights and expiration dates in Google Drive

Google states that this function does not exist not yet available for shared Drive files. You can restrict access in great detail depending on the role of the people you share documents with. So when you set an expiration date, you can add an expiration date “only” for readers, commenters, editors, and users with access to published items if they accept the “User with access to published items” setting.

Things are a little different when it comes to folders. You can still set expiration dates for readers and commenters, but editors become Readers. In other words, when an expiration date is set on a folder, The editor no longer has the right to change anything inside. He can still access it and read the documents. If you want to permanently deny his access, you will need to change his role manually. According to Google, this feature will also be implemented in the Android version of Drive at the end of the month. It is currently reserved for paid Google Workspace plan owners. You’ll only have to wait if you have the free Google Workspace edition.
