Google donates billions of dollars every year to support Android against iOS

While Google is launching the stable version of Android 14 alongside the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro in October 2023, the trial currently being conducted between the web giant and the US Department of Justice allows us to learn more about the Mountain View company’s applications.

As a matter of fact, Jamie Rosenberg, the company’s manager responsible for Android and Google Play Store, made statements regarding the sharing of revenues from the search engine. Every year, Google spends billions of dollars on Android device makers and phone carriers like Samsung and Verizon.

Google shares search engine revenue to protect Android and its monopoly

According to the official, these expenses are of vital importance. Ensures innovation around Android and for bolsters its ecosystem against its main rivals Apple and iOS. “Google distributes search engine revenue to Samsung Electronics Co. and phone carriers like Verizon, ensuring those companies have the resources to introduce new Android products and help them stay up-to-date (for example, by continuing to offer security bets)” he explained on the podium.

As a reminder, American justice recently sued Google for violating antitrust laws. He claims that Google has established a monopoly position in search by paying billions of dollars to Samsung and other companies. Like this, Google Search becomes the default search engine on smartphones and PCsis to the detriment of competition. In exchange for this default setup of Google Search, Google pays companies a portion of the advertising revenue generated from searches.

Quite interestingly, if Jamie Rosenberg’s testimony is to be believed, Apple is also one of the beneficiaries of this revenue sharing. In exchange for the integration of Google Search and main Google apps on iPhones.
