Google Chrome will soon be obsolete on many Android smartphones

This is the lifecycle (more or less): manufacturers and other developers regularly discontinue support for their apps for older smartphones. For example, WhatsApp recently announced that smartphones older than Android 5.0 will no longer receive updates. Google Chrome goes a little further.

In a recent blog post, the company announced that Chrome will no longer update on smartphones running a version prior to Android 8.0. In other words, as always with such announcements, the measure retains only a small portion of users. In fact, according to the latest Android deployment figures provided by Google, only 5% of users are still running a version prior to Oreo.

Of course, if you are one of the latter, remember that this does not mean that your browser will suddenly stop working. Concretely, nothing will change for you; That’s the problem: without a security update, your smartphone will become much more vulnerable to hacker attacks, thus compromising the security of your personal data and, in the worst case, your bank account. However, even using a smartphone with a 7-year-old operating system is a risk in itself.

Note that Google does not specify a specific date for the end of browser support on older Android smartphones. But speculations are swirling around December 6 for a simple reason; like this being the date for the next update to be rolled out to all compatible devices.
