Google Assistant: Watch the New Ambient Mode in action

Google has released a new video showing Google Assistant’s Ambient Mode in action. As a reminder, Ambient Mode will keep your smartphone’s lock screen (especially while charging) an information terminal and a command board : weather, calendar, notifications and controls of connected objects. This feature was first presented at IFA in Berlin in September 2019.

Ambient Mode looks rather intuitive and promising, if not original, as it offers features that can be found in a Google Nest Hub, for example. In the app, Ambient Mode can inform you about the schedule of your next appointment, view your various notifications, incoming emails, and directly turn off or on your connected light bulbs. Everything will be done on the lock screen of your tablet or smartphone.

If you want to try Ambience Mode, unfortunately, you will have to be patient. For now, we only know of four compatible devices:

  • Two tablets from Lenovo: Yoga Smart Tab and Smart Tab 8
  • two Nokia smartphones: Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2

The video doesn’t say whether Ambient Mode is actually available for these devices or if and when the feature is coming to other smartphones and tablets. However, it states that Ambient Mode will initially be accessible from devices”Selected by Google” Running Android 8.0 or newer. Google did not provide further details. According to the manufacturer, Ambient Mode “deeply integrated into Android”, meaning Google can easily roll out the feature to many devices at scale.
