The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ may not upgrade to Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but they will almost certainly upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo.
Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 8 is the first Galaxy device to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat. While owners of older devices such as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 hope to upgrade from Android 7.0 to Android 7.1, Samsung has not confirmed any additional Galaxy Android 7.1.1 updates.
Some Galaxy users focus on the possibility of Android 7.1.1, while others focus on the transition to Google’s new operating system, Android 8.0 Oreo. Google has confirmed Samsung Android 8.0 Oreo updates and we could see the first release later this year.
Samsung hasn’t announced the list of devices that have migrated from Android Nougat to Android Oreo, but it looks like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be among the first to come out of Android 7.0.

It’s unclear if Samsung will release an Android 8.0 Oreo beta like it did for Android Nougat. The company tested Android 7.0 on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in late 2016, before shipping the final version to devices in early 2017.
If there’s a Samsung Galaxy Android 8.0 Oreo beta, we’d expect the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and perhaps the Galaxy Note 8 to be included.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed it, but we expect the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to be among the first devices to be upgraded to the new OS. Flagship Galaxy devices often rank first over major Android upgrades.
Newer Galaxy devices like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy S7 should switch to Android Oreo but other popular devices may lag behind on Android Nougat.
Samsung usually keeps Galaxy smartphones and tablets up to date with major Android updates for two years; which means devices like Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 are in danger of missing Android 8.0 Oreo.
While these devices may miss Android Oreo, their software support will not end. Samsung and its carrier partners are extending bug fixes and security patches to devices well beyond the two-year mark.
Samsung’s Galaxy S8 Oreo update isn’t the only Android 8.0 update in the works.
The company is reportedly planning to launch the Galaxy S9 flagship next year with Android Oreo. The device may also have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 1440×2960 QHD+ Infinity Display, 4GB of RAM and a physical fingerprint reader.
Galaxy S8 Android Oreo updates may arrive before the end of 2017, but the Galaxy S9 probably won’t arrive until next year.
It’s unclear how Samsung’s version of Android 8.0 Oreo will differ from Google’s.
Google’s version of Android 8.0 comes with a long list of improvements, including new emojis, improved performance, a wider color gamut, and Autofill.
Samsung tends to customize the Android version; This means that some Android 8.0 Oreo features may be missing from the Android Oreo version.
The company is reportedly bringing some of the Galaxy Note 8’s Samsung Experience features to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, but it’s unclear if Android 8.0 will offer these features.
