Galaxy S7 Camera

Yes, the Galaxy S7 camera is just 12 megapixels compared to the 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S6 that everyone boasts and loves. That said, Samsung’s new camera packs some impressive technology that could make it the best camera in any smartphone ever released.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have the same camera, the first “Dual Pixel” camera sensor in a smartphone. It has a large 1.4 or 1.5um pixel size and an incredibly fast f/1.7 aperture that could potentially rival some DSLR cameras. It’s that good. The phone uses all the pixels to have an extremely fast and accurate autofocus, image stabilization for clear photos, and a massive 12 Dual Pixel sensor capable of capturing light faster than most smartphone cameras available today.

Samsung actually claims to capture around 95% more light than other competing smartphone cameras, and does it faster. That means image stabilization to turn it all off for stunning photos, great indoor or low-light photography, and gorgeous videos in 4k and more. Both phones have the same specs in terms of camera performance, so this is none of the business of someone trying to decide one against the other.

Galaxy S7 Battery Life

As we mentioned above, battery life is something users should be aware of. One of the biggest complaints about the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge last year was battery life. Samsung only added a small 2,550mAh battery for a big and powerful phone. Even the Galaxy S5 in 2014 had a larger 2,800mAh battery inside. This was unacceptable and the Galaxy S6 didn’t last nearly long enough.

Samsung totally fixed that this year. The screen is more efficient, with the new Snapdragon 820 processor, Android 6.0 and more, so battery life should be much better. Add to that the fact that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 now have 3,000 and 3,600 mAh batteries, this phone should last much longer than last year’s model.

We have Quick Charge, which charges the phone from 0-50% in less than 25 minutes and fully charges in about 80 minutes. Samsung also used a similar Fast Wireless Charging technology with the Galaxy Note 5. It means these phones are better in every way, but will last longer and charge faster. Do you want one yet?

With a larger 3,600mAh battery, the Galaxy S7 Edge should provide longer usage times, but it also has a larger screen that drains that battery. So this is a launch. We haven’t tried both yet, but my Galaxy S7 Edge easily lasted for 24 hours with almost 5 hours of crucial “Screen On” time before I had to plug it into its charger. And even then, there was still 22% left. This is much better than last year’s phones.

What all this means is that both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge should have long battery life, but power users may want to consider the Edge for the extra juice inside.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge: Price

Again, all carriers will launch the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge on March 11. And many already have phones. Buyers outright will see a pretty big difference, but for US carriers that offer payment plans, a few bucks will get the bigger, better, and longer-lasting Galaxy S7 Edge. As long as your hands are big enough.

The Galaxy S7 will be $199 with a 2-year contract if you can find it, and $299 for the Galaxy S7 Edge. Still, most operators trashed the 2-year deals. That means the Galaxy S7 costs around $680 (varies by carrier) and the Galaxy S7 Edge costs $760 or more. AT&T is cheaper on a monthly basis, while Sprint asks the least questions overall.

Similar pricing applies to the Galaxy S7 Edge. It comes with a larger 5.5-inch curved screen and a larger 3,600mAh battery. The Galaxy S7 Edge is arguably the better phone, and it only costs a few dollars a month, or around $100 in the long run. But not everyone wants a curved screen. Here is the current pricing.

All said and done, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge appear to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy S6. The design may be quite similar, but these are completely different phones on the inside.

As for which one a buyer should choose, we cannot answer that. They’re nearly identical in every way, despite having a larger curved screen, shortcut apps on that curved glass, and a bigger battery that will give you better battery life and longer usage. At the end of the day, buyers have to go to a carrier or retail store and try it out for themselves. See if the 5.5-inch screen is too big for your hands, and if not, spend a few extra dollars each month and enjoy the best Samsung has to offer.
