The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has been on the market for about 8 months and millions of users love everything it has to offer. The model, which has a large 5.7-inch screen and improved features over the past years, does not mention a feature called Fast Wireless Charging. Here, we’ll go over everything owners need to know.
The new Galaxy S7 has the same technology and is something all users should consider. Wireless charging is nothing new, but fast wireless charging technology is much better and here are some details.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge from April 2015, as well as the new Galaxy Note 5 and Edge Plus, feature a premium all-glass and aluminum design, but this means there are no replaceable batteries like previous Galaxy and Note devices. This upset many buyers, but Samsung made a compromise by adding wireless charging to both phones. Read on for more on how it works and Fast Wireless Charging on Note 5.
Wireless charging is nothing new, but there are two different types of wireless charging. If you buy the wrong charging pad or your new car doesn’t support the correct type, it will not work with your wireless enabled device like Nexus 6. This is done with several different types of charging. Like Ford and Chevy, it has Qi Wireless Charging and PMA Wireless Charging Standard. With the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5, S6 Edge and even the new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Samsung implemented both versions.
So both types of wireless charging work with your phone. This handy option and taking the guesswork out of any wireless charger will charge the user’s new phone. Many Starbuck locations have PMA chargers that will charge these phones while users sip their sugary drinks.
How does it work
Essentially, users buy a pad and instead of plugging in a smartphone or tablet to charge, all you have to do is drop it on the charging pad and it will automatically start charging. In a sense it’s wireless because you can take it and go and don’t worry about cables, but the pad is attached with a typical micro-USB cable.
Drop it on the wireless charging pad and it will charge, pick it up and go and you have a full battery. However, wireless charging is slow and takes around 3-4 hours to fully charge a device. Wireless charging pads have 10w output. A regular wired charger (like the one in the box) will fully charge your device to 100% in less than 90 minutes. Basically almost twice as fast. So while wireless charging is nice, it’s not ideal because it takes too long.
Samsung Fast Wireless Charger
With the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the company introduced fast wireless charging. It’s an option that will come to more charging pads and more devices in the near future, such as the S7 and the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Note 6. This promises to increase speed by 1.4 times and now the Qi Wireless charging pads will deliver 15w of charging power. This should make wireless charging a real feature that owners will want, rather than something convenient that almost no one will use.
Now users won’t have to choose between wired charging out of the box, fast charging their smartphones, or easy wireless charging that lasts forever. Fast Wireless charging promises to charge the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge 50 minutes faster than typical wireless charging. Here’s our quick hands-on video showing the Note 5 and its Fast Wireless Charger in action, with Samsung’s added smooth animation and screen effect.
As you can see above, it is extremely easy. All you have to do is leave your Note 5 on the charger and that’s it. Fast Wireless charging starts and starts charging your smartphone wirelessly. Buyers will get a faster charge using the included wall charger, but this is a nice addition that will make wireless charging really useful rather than convenience.
Samsung has released several Fast Wireless Charging Pads and they are the best retail for $69.99. This will charge any Qi-enabled device and is backwards compatible with regular wireless charging phones like the Galaxy S6, Nexus 6 and many other devices with wireless charging nowadays.
This is by no means an extreme leap or a revolutionary new feature, but it’s one more way Samsung is pushing the bar with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. I’ll still use a wired charger to power my phone, but having a fast wireless charger on my nightstand next to my bed is definitely more appealing now. Samsung has continued to add this to every new phone and it will likely appear on the new Galaxy Note 6 in 2016 as well.
