Fortnite finally available on Play Store: Epic surrenders to Google

Fortnite has been one of the biggest video game successes of recent years, as a study published earlier in the year showed. Like PUBG, Fortnite is a battle royale game where dozens of players compete in the same environment. The goal of such a game is to be on as many platforms as possible so that players can connect and start a game whenever they want. This is how Fortnite came to mobile devices, specifically Android, in 2018.

But Epic didn’t take the easy way out. Indeed, the game publisher hasn’t wanted to submit Fortnite to Google for integration into the Play Store for months. The reason is clear: Epic Games didn’t want to pay Google to have it on the Play Store. Recall that Mountain View receives a commission from the sale of applications (whether or not for gaming) and integrated purchases. Epic’s boss, Tim Sweeney, has always claimed this commission was unfair.

Since Fortnite’s arrival on Android, players have to download and install the app from the official Epic Games website (by unlocking the setting that normally blocks installing apps from third-party sources).

An inside fight

In addition, the firm maintains the false image that these apps are actually malware. It is a negative situation both technically and economically. Therefore, Tim Sweeney accepts and agrees to pay Google’s commission on all financial transactions made through the version available on the Fortnite Play Store. But the boss of Epic Games is not giving up, and he hopes that Mountain View will change the terms of access to the Android ecosystem to ensure fair competition among various game developers in the near future.
