Pip mode, or picture-in-picture, which allows you to minimize a window while keeping it open on your screen, is nothing new on Android per se. But this is still very underdeveloped as most cases are reserved for videos. Years after this feature was introduced in Android 8.0, Google Chrome is finally taking a step to make it more universal.
In fact, it’s now possible to minimize an entire tab in PiP mode with Chrome 120, as demonstrated in a video posted by AssembleDebug on X (Twitter). However, please note that this feature is only available in Chrome Private Tabs, Google’s integrated browser solution that allows developers to open pages within their apps. In other words, this new PiP mode only works when you open a page from an application.
PiP mode gets a little revolution thanks to Chrome
Click on an arrow icon and the page will instantly minimize and slide on the smartphone screen, so you can move it wherever you want. However, it is worth noting that the page in question does not display any content. For example, it is impossible to continue reading your article in this reduced format because only the title of the article and the site icon are displayed in this format.
When you click, the page reopens quickly and smoothly on the big screen. Here’s how you can enable this feature on your Android smartphone:
- Open Google Chrome After making sure you have installed the latest update
- Type in the search bar chrome://flags
- On the page that opens, type again in the search bar #cct-minimized
- Tap the drop-down menu and select the option activated
- press the button Restart at the bottom right of the screen

This functionality in Chrome is hidden behind a flag and does not appear to be enabled by default. You can enable this with: #cct– minimized flag. This is also available in the stable version of Chrome#Chromium #Android #Google pic.twitter.com/B73Hyv1f43
