In 2019, Apple Arcade launched with a not-so-obvious concept at the time: a catalog of games accessible via subscription and downloadable from any compatible device. Since then, Game Pass has remained at the top of the market, and has recently been joined by PlayStation and even Netflix. This sudden interest from competitors in such a service could spell the death knell for Apple’s platform.
The rumors circulating in the corridors are not optimistic at all. In a recent report, mobilegamer.biz media gave voice to many developers on the platform, and the opinions were almost unanimous. The golden age of Apple Arcade is now long gone, and everything indicates that the Cupertino company is preparing to abandon the project, and the developers are using it as a means of distribution.
Like the “smell of death” in Apple Arcade
Everyone agrees that Apple Arcade’s debut was particularly successful. Payments upon the release of the game were quite high, which allowed the studio to make a profit very quickly. But everything changed at the end of 2020 when Apple started cutting the amount it paid developers. Many projects were abandoned before the platform was relaunched in spring 2021.
Likewise, Apple Arcade management doesn’t seem to know where to go anymore. The internal strategy is particularly vague and kept secret from the developers above all else. Many people reported that they tried to submit their projects to the platform without knowing whether they would be accepted or not. One developer went so far as to claim that Apple Arcade owns it. “The smell of death” “It’s almost like they’re not sure if they’re going to end up with a job.” Apparently Apple doesn’t allow anything to be visible.
