Android 12 will make it easier to install apps from alternative stores to the Play Store

Android 12 will open up alternative app stores to the Google Play Store. Following criticism from developers and users, Google is set to make it easier to install an app from the Galaxy Store, Huawei AppGallery, or Amazon App Store. The Mountain View firm wants to prove that it can: proof of openness, unlike its rival Apple.

“Android has always allowed users to install apps from multiple stores. In fact, most Android devices come with at least two pre-installed app stores, and consumers can install additional alternatives. Each store can decide on its own business model and its own features.” Sameer Samat, vice president of Android and Google Play, explains in a blog post:

As the manager pointed out, Android users can choose to do without the Play Store. On Samsung Galaxy smartphones we find the Galaxy Store. On Huawei devices we find the App Gallery. In addition to the pre-installed stores, Alternatives like Amazon App Store, Aptoide or Fdroid.

Google Takes on Apple After Fortnite Takedown

“Even if the developer and Google do not agree on the commercial terms of the Play Store, the developer can still offer their app on Android” Sameer Samat underlines by taking Fortnite as an example. The video game, which is not available on the Play Store, is offered for sale on another alternative store, the Epic Games Store. In half-words, Google is fighting its rival AppleUnlike Google, Apple does not allow developers to offer their apps anywhere outside of the App Store. Therefore, they have to abide by App Store rules to offer their apps on iOS, including a 30% commission on in-app purchases. Fortnite was banned from the App Store for violating the rule.

“Some developers have given us feedback on how we can further improve the user experience for people installing apps from other stores.” The manager explains. Therefore, Google promises that from Android 12 onwards: Make it easier to install apps from stores other than the Play StoreUnfortunately, Google is not providing any further information on how these new features will be integrated into the update.

This press release comes shortly after rumors surfaced that Google was preparing to increase its commission on all purchases made through the Play Store by 30%. The Californian company is clearly trying to squeeze Android developers. The hidden message behind Google’s words seems clear: if you’re not happy with the 30% commission, you can always offer your app on a store other than the Play Store.
