The latest stable version of Android Messages was 3.3.044, but the XDA Developers blog has managed to get a hold of the source code of version 3.4 of the app, which is now available. The messaging app is surprisingly lagging behind some competing solutions (like the iPhone’s Messages app), but that seems to be turning around. Recently, Google decided to integrate the service with Google Chrome and Firefox in the form of a web client, after adding RCS, which allows simultaneous sending of multimedia content with SMS.
Android Messages 3.4: new features still not active
Other changes were also detected in version 3.4. For example, there is a dark mode – lastly we want to say… anyway, it’s not fully active yet. This was already available in the source code of version 3.2 without actually being functional. A screenshot from XDA shows what this dark mode would look like; unfortunately there are still some errors and areas that remain white. Unfortunately, this dark mode cannot yet be activated by the user: XDA had to force its activation by changing the code. However, it is hoped that users will be able to use it quickly after the deployment of Android Messages 3.4.
The other innovation is better integration between Android Messages and Chromebooks. One line of code suggests an effect that it will be possible to match these computers with the application. The site says it’s part of a feature set called “Better Together”, which Google is slowly launching. Version 3.4 therefore forms the basis of two highly anticipated features. It is not yet clear when Google will enable them. When Android Messages 3.4 is available for your device, you can download it from the Google Play Store.
