Android: Merger between Quick Share and Nearby Share takes place, file sharing becomes easier

Android-Nearby-Share-Windows

During CES 2024, Google and Samsung announced a partnership that will ultimately simplify file sharing solutions on Android. Currently, Galaxy smartphone users have the choice between two possibilities: Samsung’s solution Quick Share and Google’s solution Nearby Share. By combining their services, the two manufacturers promise the best of both worlds in a single solution.

Almost. This merger finally took place today. Concretely, this allows Galaxy smartphone users to share files with devices that are not part of the Samsung ecosystem; Note that it is already possible to send files to a Windows PC. Excellent news, but accompanied by a slight disappointment in terms of functionality.

Nearby Share integrates with Quick Share on Galaxy smartphones

As journalist Mishaal Rhaman noted, we can particularly regret the lack of an option to create a temporary download link to download the files; this functionality was still available in Quick Share before the merger. Likewise, private sharing, which allowed a file to be temporarily encrypted during download, also disappeared without anyone knowing why.

On the other hand, the arrival of Share with Nearby brought a very practical functionality that will still save time. It is now possible to access the list of nearby devices that can receive the file using Quick Share from the sharing menu. In this way, you no longer need to open the application to send files. Note that this feature has already been seen on the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, and OnePlus 11 in recent months.
