Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update Rumors

It looks like the next Android version we can expect to start arriving in the near future will be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. A bug fix update to fix a few major issues users have experienced since the initial release of Android 5.0, not to mention fixing some issues for the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop version.

A single Android 5.1 Lollipop rumor surfaced at the end of last year. Rumor has it that Google will release another comprehensive bug fix update for Android users and upgrade the software from Android 5.0. But now we’re starting to see reports and details that suggest Android 5.1.1 might be coming soon.

Earlier in March, Google finally announced and released the major Android 5.1 version that aims to fix a number of issues users experienced with the first Lollipop update, but now they have a few more issues to fix and they are working on another update. Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. This is bad news for manufacturers trying to keep up, but good news as a whole and good news for Nexus owners.

Android 5.1 Lollipop was a major update aimed at fixing a number of bugs, and it did just that. It made the original Nexus 7 from 2012 usable again, fixed some battery life issues on most Nexus devices, improved Lollipop’s overall performance, and is slowly coming to more devices. However, it looks like another update is coming.

We started seeing more than one in the past day. reports where developers noticed some changes in Android SDK Managers and saw signs in an incoming Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. The SDK Manager, which many Android developers use to manage apps and the like, is starting to see it appear, so a release date or what’s new are still unknown.

As many Android users know, there was a major issue in Android 5.0 Lollipop where apps would freeze, crash, restart and misbehave, which we will simply refer to as “memory leak bug”. This is an issue with the Lollipop version and it affects all devices that have seen the update. Some are not as bad as others and many users resorted to restarting their device every few days to clear the memory on their device to keep the performance running smoothly.

Initially many were waiting for this to be fixed with Android 5.1 Lollipop, not to mention Google approved themselves that they fixed the memory leak issue. It’s still available on Android 5.1, however, so this incremental Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update could mainly target that, along with a few minor improvements or tweaks to the operating system.

Another thing we expected to be different when Android 5.1 Lollipop arrived was a “silent” mode for the Nexus 6 and other smartphones, but that too is missing. Instead, notifications and alerts that Google changed are now managed and a new do not disturb type feature is available. And while it’s great, it completely stops all noise, and that includes alarms. Android 5.1 changed this to not ignore alarms, but this is not an ideal solution, so this may be another potential fix that comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

There’s really nothing to go on for now. Google has not yet confirmed that they are running on or will release Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but of course they are always working on newer versions of the mobile OS. All in all this is a .1 incremental release which means we won’t usually see much in terms of new features and will likely only see some major security improvements and behind-the-scenes bug fixes. All that being said, we can’t be sure until owners start arriving or until Google makes an announcement.
