Android 13: Google will finally add spatial audio, 2 years after Apple

In 2020, Apple is adding spatial audio to its compatible iPhones. A small revolution in the smartphone world, which will be confirmed a year later with the arrival of Apple Music and, accordingly, the devices on which the app is installed. In fact, this includes Android smartphones. Indeed, since the summer of 2021, Apple Music has been offering spatial audio in the Android version of its app.

But Google’s operating system still lacked to offer it natively. Two years after Apple, expectations were increasingly felt by users. According to new APIs and frameworks discovered by Esper teams in Android 13, it’s finally coming to an end. In the past, Mountain View has guaranteed that spatial audio will be available on Android by 2022.

Spatial audio will be available in Android 13

However, we don’t know much about the modalities of the technology in Android for now. The only available information, spatial audio, must follow the movements of the user’s head using the Bluetooth connection. As a reminder, we find this feature in Apple devices that already offer the technology. Betas are linked in the coming months, so we should learn more about it.

There remains the problem of smartphones that will offer spatial sound. At Apple, these are all iPhones after the iPhone 7. Therefore, a wide range of Android smartphones can be expected to be compatible, despite their relatively old release date. On the other hand, we will of course have to wait for manufacturers to develop the Android 13 overlay to take advantage of it. As is often the case, patience is key.
