It all started with a tweet from the famous leaker @IceUniverse. The latter shares it on his account a seemingly harmless wallpaperwhile explaining; “ATTENTION ! ! ! Under no circumstances try to put this image as wallpaper, especially on Samsung smartphones! This will crash your smartphone! Do not try it! If someone sends you this image, ignore it”. If you put this image as your wallpaper, two things can actually happen. On some smartphones it won’t cause any errors.
However, when a wallpaper is installed on an affected smartphone like the Samsung A50 or Google Pixel 3 XL, the device becomes unusable, with the screen turning on and off in a loop. Restarting the device will not help. The only solution to get rid of this issue is core panic It is to restore factory settings via bootloader. Or start the smartphone in Safe mode and delete the wallpaper file on your device. Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to test the problem at home or joke about it with a friend or colleague.
Dylan Roussel from 9to5Google (one of his posts is included at the end of the article) gives us the explanation for this strange bug in a series of tweets. It could actually be a bug in the way Android 10 handles color profiles. The wallpaper is actually associated with an RGB color profile. However, on some smartphones, Android 10 tries to display the image in the sRGB color profile without converting it, which causes this annoying crash. The bug seems to have been fixed in the latest Android 11 previews.
So this is happening on the Pixel 3 XL with Android 10, but not on the Pixel 4 XL with Android 11. Here’s what happened:
