It may not have Siri or Google Assistant, but Samsung’s Bixby can do some pretty cool stuff. In fact, this virtual assistant might be the best. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know about Bixby Voice commands on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy S9. Bixby isn’t just another Alexa, and it actually has a few great tricks. One is that open to 3rd parties developers and it will get better with time. Then, instead of small tasks like Siri or Google Assistant, Bixby can interact with almost any app, setting, or option on Galaxy phones. Essentially turning your voice into a powerful automation tool.
Contest can turn on WiFi or use the camera flash as a flashlight, and so can Bixby. But Bixby can also order an Uber, send and receive screenshots, open and install apps, find specific vacation photos, and more. Bixby can take a photo and upload it to Instagram with a filter and a hashtag. Seriously. These hands-free controls are just a voice command away.
Once you have Bixby installed and setup, you are ready to start talking. We recommend turning on the wake-up feature so you can do all this hands-free. In addition to the “advanced voice recognition” feature where Bixby will have you read 5 sentences aloud to learn how you speak.

These are just a few of the hundreds of commands you can ask for and then watch them magically happen. It’s pretty neat to see the phone automatically open apps, scroll through the settings menu, or leave comments. We recommend opening the Bixby app by pressing the dedicated button below the volume keys on the left side of most new Galaxy phones. 175 Useful Bixby Voice Commands
Bixby can do anything we can do on a smartphone, as long as you ask the right way. This includes changing settings, increasing the volume, browsing web pages or recording videos and uploading them to YouTube. It’s pretty strong and gets better over time.
To try any of these without activating the “Hello Bixby” wake command, you have to hold the button and remove all its magic. So first do this in settings then you can do these commands without ever touching your phone.

Bixby can control, navigate and use any Samsung app on your phone. Launch each of these commands with “Open Gallery and” or Open Browser and” or other commands. It also works with many other applications.

The same neat controls and options are available in messages, Samsung’s text messaging app. Unfortunately Bixby doesn’t seem to support most 3rd party text messaging apps at the moment. I tried Textra and it failed, but Samsung recently opened up access to 3rd party developers. For now, try these if you’re using Samsung’s Messages app.
One of our favorite aspects of Bixby is how advanced its automation tools are. Bixby can do just about anything, and that includes changing all settings on your phone. Take a look at what Bixby can do while Siri or Google Assistant can turn on WiFi or your flashlight.
Bixby can control the camera and manage all the settings in the camera app. Whether you want to record a video for YouTube, take a photo or send a selfie to your friend, it does it all.
In the future, all Samsung Smart TVs and devices will have Bixby built in, but for now we can use Galaxy phones and Bixby to control some smart home products. More to come gradually throughout 2018. These include anything that works with Samsung Connect or robot vacuum cleaners. As Bixby 2.0 starts to move forward, we’ll see it in everything from Samsung.

This is just a small sample of what Bixby can do on our smartphones and devices. Samsung promises that the service will learn over time, understand context in conversations, and gradually learn to work with all apps and services. When I turn off WiFi and other things it starts learning my habits. And unlike Siri or Google Assistant, with 3rd party developer access, apps, games, and pretty much anything else can benefit from Bixby.
Again, this is just the beginning for Bixby. It’s only available on Galaxy smartphones at the moment, but more products are coming soon from the Bixby 2.0 smart speaker to be used in HomePod, Samsung Smart TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and other devices. Not to mention the upcoming Galaxy Note 9.
Note that this list will grow significantly as more Bixby products arrive. For now, most are designed for smartphones or smart home appliances. If you don’t want to use Bixby at all, or if you don’t want the button to wake your phone, Samsung lets you disable it with the latest update. We’ll update this list with more volume controls and options as they become available.
