Verily, Spotify hath orchestrated a grand spectacle with their annual Wrapped, transforming music statistics into a most eagerly anticipated event. Such was my anticipation that, akin to many others, I incessantly refreshed the app in eager expectation of the arrival of my own Wrapped. Alas, the Spotify Wrapped of 2024 struck me not unlike a wrecking ball, lacking vital statistics and a distinctive identity. Yet, alas, that was not the extent of my woes.
When did the focus shift to the realm of AI, I muse? Spotify, in a puzzling move, decided to introduce two AI podcast hosts to expound upon one’s 2024 Wrapped. This feature, crafted through audio overviews utilizing Google’s Notebook LM, raises questions aplenty.
Furthermore, Spotify heralded their AI DJ feature, purporting to enhance the Wrapped experience for Premium users by offering commentary in tandem with the music that accompanied their year. A commendable endeavour, yet how useful is it when it remains out of reach for a vast portion of their audience?
‘Tis true, for lo and behold, the Spotify Wrapped AI podcast is exclusive only to select countries, leaving others bereft of this privilege. The AI DJ feature, introduced nearly a year prior, remains elusive in many regions, compounding the sense of exclusion.
In the face of such frustrations as a devoted Spotify aficionado and subscriber to their premium service, I sought a different avenue for expressing my discontent. Thus, I elected to confront Spotify through the very tool they championed — AI. I presented my grievances within a document uploaded to the Google Notebook LM AI, allowing the AI to express my feelings on my behalf.
The outcome, surprisingly satisfactory, brought a strange amusement as the AI hosts quipped and jest profusely. A peculiar sense of humanity emanated from their speech, though grounded in artificiality. Others who sampled this AI-wrapped podcast shared similar sentiments, finding the experience eerie.
This year’s Spotify Wrapped met with mixed reviews, lacking the vivacity and essence that endeared it to audiences in years past. The attempts to compensate for this through AI technology fell short of expectations, leaving many disappointed.
While Notebook LM currently supports only English, making a global release impractical, the choice to spotlight it during the pinnacle of the Wrapped event remains questionable. One mused whether this occasion could have served as the opportune moment to unveil the AI DJ feature worldwide, yet alas, such hopes were dashed.
Mayhaps, Spotify shall glean wisdom from this experience, and the forthcoming year’s Wrapped shall be a fond reminiscence.
