Dearly cheating: man is sued by Bundie and must pay almost R$60 million

Almost every player in the gaming community has, at some point, wanted to find a way to level up, get through a stage or become the best in the game more easily. But it’s good to know that these cheats are not well accepted among gamers and even less so by companies.

Furthermore, some acts can be seen as prosecutable crimes. So, this is what a player of “Destiny 2”, Bundie’s famous shooter, learned in practice.

Cheating that cost almost R$60 million

“Destiny 2” is a first-person shooter game, released in 2017. The title, available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, has a multiplayer platform, in which players can face each other in team combat or one-on-one.

With its fame, it was to be expected that many people would become great at the game, causing envy in many others who always want to stand out.

Therefore, thinking of ways to improve the skills of those who play, Romanian Mihai Claudiu-Florentin created the VeteranCheats software, capable of circumventing the game’s settings, giving advantages such as automatic aiming and seeing through walls.

So, the man started selling this system online to “Destiny 2” players. But the developer company promptly sued Claudiu-Florentin in 2021, asking for compensation of around US$ 12 million, the equivalent of almost R$ 60 million. In February of this year, the verdict was in favor of Bungie.

Values ​​and accusations

The producer claimed that several damages were caused by the more than 5.8 thousand downloads identified. The amounts requested refer to damages for DMCA violation (R$ 57.8 million), copyright infringement (R$ 724 thousand) and the costs of the process for the company (R$ 1 million).

The website remained online even after the judge’s decision. However, it is no longer possible to download it. As for Mihai, he was banned from engaging in any action that could violate the company’s copyright. The Romanian must have learned to never try to cheat in any game again.
