Slavery game removed from Google Play and developer BANNED from the platform

Accessibility to game development has made this process faster and easier. The problem is that not all productions are necessarily positive or will add something good to people’s lives. In fact, some of them even violate human rights.

This is the case of the so-called “Slavery Simulator”, a “game” that, until a few days ago, was available for download and monetized with ads within Google Play.

Google Play bans Magnus Games for ‘Slavery Simulator’

In the so-called “slavery simulator,” the player had fun pretending to be a slave owner, always portrayed as people from ethnic minorities, such as black, brown, and indigenous people. In the “game,” the slave owner used torture to punish them and profit from it.

As the description already makes clear, the game It is very offensive to society as a whole, but especially to the black community, which has a historical past marked by slavery and which dates back to the present day.

After protests from the community, mainly onlinethe title was taken down last Wednesday (24/05). However, the question still remained: who is profiting from this type of content?

Therefore, last Saturday (27/5), Google Play announced the ban of the developer Magnus Games of its platform. In addition, the Educafro association requested compensation of R$100 million based on articles 1, II, IV and VII of Law No. 7,347/1985 (Public Civil Action Law).

According to Educafro and based on Brazilian law, a public civil action is admissible to protect damages caused to consumers, to the honor and dignity of racial and ethnic groups, as well as to any diffuse interest.

For a company that earns R$1.7 million per minute, the compensation is not very expensive.

Developer positioning

A Magnus Gamesa Malaysia-based production company, has not officially commented on the matter, but left a message in the game itself:

“The game was created exclusively for entertainment purposes. Our studio condemns slavery in any form. All content in the game is fictional and is not tied to specific historical events. All coincidences are accidental.”

Even so, the warning is not enough to justify the defense of racism and slavery. After all, some of the user comments available about the game on the platform revealed the racist and offensive thoughts that they really have.

“Great game to pass the time. But I think it needed more torture options. They could have added the option to whip the slave too.”

And what about Google?

It is worth remembering that all content made available in application distribution stores undergoes internal supervision before reaching the public.

However, users who are more tech-savvy know that Google Play is not the store that pays the most attention to the type of content that arrives there, as several softwares malicious programs are distributed there and the company does not seem to be doing enough to stop them.

But this does not remove the responsibility of these companies. By making available games By defending crime, they show that they do not comply with their own policies. Otherwise, they are saying that they are complicit in racism. That is another story.
