Spotify hasn’t just given us good news lately, here’s something that might cheer us up. The music streaming platform is launching Spotify Basic, a new subscription that’s cheaper than the Premium plans offered so far. The only tradeoff for this more affordable offering is the removal of 15 hours of audiobook listening from a catalog of more than 250,000 titles.
Users who only listen to music or podcasts and do not use this feature will therefore be able to pay slightly less for their subscription. The difference is not huge, but there is value in existing. Spotify Basic costs $10.99 per monthCompared to $11.99 per month for Spotify Premium Individual. The Spotify Basic Family offering is also available at $16.99 per month.
Increase the price of Spotify Premium and then launch Spotify Basic
For now, Spotify Basic is only available in the United States, the first market to integrate access to audiobooks. However, it is very possible that France will be affected in the near future, which is not good news. Spotify uses the audiobook argument to increase the price of its subscriptions. Therefore, we can see that the price of the Spotify Premium package has increased; the service makes this easier by launching Spotify Basic at the same time as older Premium for the same price.
At the end of May, Spotify announced a slight price increase in France as the service passed on a new tax on music streaming platforms to its subscribers. Thus, Spotify Premium for its individual plan increased to 11.12 euros per month instead of 10.99 euros per month, which is the highest price in the European Union.
A new subscription will also come to light soon. This will provide access to lossless audio, which has been Spotify’s long-held promise to benefit from better quality audio. However, this proposal will come at a high cost. In the United States, it can reach between $16 and $17 per month. To entice users, Spotify will also work on adaptive playlists based on machine learning.
