Samsung smartphone users were the first to benefit from it. Since 2019 they can register their Navigo Pass on their phone and then transfer it to terminals to access public transport in the Ile-de-France area. The remaining Android manufacturers did the same in October 2022. What about on the iPhone side? We are still waiting.
The arrival of the dematerialized Navigo Pass to Apple was originally announced for February 2021, then delayed to this year. At issue is Apple’s refusal to use NFC technology to connect to RATP terminals, for fear of overshadowing its own solution implemented in Apple Pay. After several years of negotiations, the company finally yielded to the demands of Île-de-France Mobilités. However, there was still an obstacle to the launch of the tool.

According to Informed, there were still some legal disputes that needed to be resolved. Last year, the governor of the Île-de-France region, Marc Guillaume, objected to the agreement between Apple and IDFM on the grounds that IDFM did not comply with certain points of French law. Since then, Apple has demonstrated its credibility by fixing problematic parts and translating the contract into French. So everything is working now for Navigo Pass to come to iPhone.
A boon for IDFM, which hopes to install the system before the start of the Paris Olympics on July 26, 2024. According to a spokesperson for the organisation, “This purely administrative incident did not cast doubt on the commissioning deadline. All lights are green. We are quite confident that an effective launch will be made in early 2024.”
