LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update: 5 Things You Should Know

With the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop launch nearly complete, LG is spending a lot of time with partner carriers providing the LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade. Several US carriers have released updates over the past month, but two more LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop updates arrived today. That said, below are a few things LG G2 owners will want to know.

In December, LG started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for the LG G3, but these were outside the US. Over the past month though, many G3 owners have received the highly anticipated update, and even a few people who own the LG G2 have. With the G3 out of the way, the main focus is now G2.

As expected, the LG update was very slow and the company isn’t sharing too many details. That said, Verizon rolled out the LG G2 Android 5.0 update on March 30, and two more carriers joined the fun today.

The LG G2 Android 5.0 update is much needed, given that the first update to Android 4.4 KitKat last year brought a lot of issues for millions of users. Most of these were fixed within the last year, but the new Android 5.0 update brings back a few. Read on to learn what we know about the update, how to take advantage of the update, and some potential issues you may encounter.

Prepare Your LG G2

This is not 5.1 which is the latest version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, but this is Android 5.0.1 Lollipop and its size is well over 500MB. Actually, the AT&T LG G2 Android 5.0 update is around 800MB in size, so you need to be prepared before accepting the update.

As many G2 owners know, updates can often do more harm than good. The KitKat update brought a lot of issues, so you’ll want to be extremely prepared. It’s always a good idea to back up your LG G2 before updating, no need to go over the five things detailed in our link above.

When the update actually arrives, make sure you have a WiFi connection as it is large and can consume a large portion of your monthly data share. Next, you’ll want your battery to be at least 75% charged, or just to be safe, on the charger.

T-Mobile & AT&T Update

While Verizon was one of the first carriers to release the LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop update, others have not been so fast. However, we have good news. T-Mobile this morning LG announces G2 update It’s available through the LG software update tool from today and is also available as a typical over-the-air update. Then, this afternoon, AT&T joined the fun and approved LG G2 is also getting Android 5.0 Lollipop starting today. We haven’t seen it yet on our AT&T unit, but it’s expected to appear on all devices in the next two weeks.

As we said above, you may not get it right away. Both carriers are slowly rolling out the update over a few weeks, but you can now try it out by going to settings > about phone > and checking for updates. AT&T only lets you check once a day, so keep that in mind and try again tomorrow. Otherwise, you will receive a notification that the update is ready in the near future. If you need to procrastinate until you get home to charge your phone or finish your workday, you probably should. As your device will be unusable until the update is finished. It should take less than 10 minutes.

New features

Users can expect a flat and modern styled user interface with many tweaks and improvements introduced with Android 5.0 Lollipop. Some of these include better battery life, smooth performance, improved notifications and a new notification pop-up bar, better lock screen options and lock screen notifications, and more. Not to mention some of the animations and effects introduced by Google with Android Lollipop. We haven’t tried it ourselves yet, but this should fix many of the major problems Android 4.4 causes for LG G2 owners. The update will bring your device to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, not the latest Android 5.1 released late last month.

Neither AT&T nor T-Mobile published a changelog and instead directed users to Google Lollipop. landing page. Material Design is the new UI guidelines and users should see more colors, animations, effects and much more. The biggest change will be new on-screen buttons, notification pop-up bar and lock screen. LG G2 Android 5.0 Problems

One thing we cannot emphasize enough is that, as we mentioned above, you should take a backup of your device before updating. While most users who updated the LG G2 to Android 5.0 Lollipop love the better performance, faster experience, improved battery life and new features, others tell a different story.

The long list of new features doesn’t mention any of the bugs that will be introduced, but there will likely be a few. Users are reporting that some apps crash and freeze that may not have been updated to support Android 5.0 Lollipop, and there are also a few bugs in Lollipop that Google is working hard to fix themselves. While some users have nothing but positive things to say about the LG G2 update, others claim that the battery life is abysmal, the performance is not better, and the keyboard seems problematic and sometimes does not register what you type. You probably won’t have any issues, but if you do, a reset will fix it, so users should make a backup before accepting the OTA update.

Google has already released Android 5.1 Lollipop and we are hearing that Android 5.1.1 Lollipop may be coming soon to fix a “memory leak” issue that causes apps to freeze, crash or slow down. If you’re experiencing these issues, a reboot will usually fix them, but only temporarily.

Don’t let potential issues stop you from accepting the update, just know that some have had a few issues while others like everything it has to offer.

LG G2 Lollipop Bug Fixes
